Designation:D 4299-83 4 m -70 AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1916 Race St.,Philadelphia,Pa.19103 Reprinted from the Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Copyright ASTM If not listed in the current combined index, will appear in the next edition.Standard Test Methods far EFFECT OF BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION ON PERMANENCE OF ADHESIVE PREPARATIONS AND ADHESIVES FILMS This standard is issued under the fwd designation D4299;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the ose of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial changesince the last revision or reapproval.1.scope 1.1 These test methods cover the determina-tion of the effect of bacterial contamination on the permanency of:1.1.1 Adhesive Preparations,by determining the comparative viscosities and observing the appearance of the uncontaminated and the con-taminated adhesives when tested under defined conditions, and 1.1.2 Adhesive Films,.by exposure to cultures of selected species of bacteria growing on agar plates.1.2 The test methods are not appropriate for all adhesives. The presence of certain biocides might yield false negative tests as a result of irreversible reaction with the medium constitu-ents.Also,the efficacy of some biocides may change in storage due to the chemical and ther-mal environment to which they are subjected as components of certain adhesives. These test methods also are not designed to cover the pos-sibility of water soluble biocides leaching out of the giue line,so they are not appropriate for determining the effect of mold contamination on adhesives under water-soaking conditions.1.3 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all o f the safity prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity o f whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.Specific precautionary state-ments are given in Section 7.2.Applicable Method:T487 Fungus Resistance for Paper and 3.Description of Terms Specific to This Stand-ard 3.1 adhesive preparation-the adhesive in liq-uid form as supplied to the customer.3.2 adhesivefilm-the small portion of the adhesive prepared for use, which is spread in a thin layer on the sensitivity disks as described in 14.2.1.1,or the adhesive layer,%in.(3-mm)thick,which is cast on the tile squares as de-scribedin 14.3.1.1.4.Significance and Use 4.1 The test for the resistance of adhesive preparations to bacterial contamination(Section 13)is used to determine susceptibility of the adhesive to biodegradation. This method is useful in demonstrating whether an adhesive prepara-tion is sufficiently protected with biocide to resist attack by bacteria during its shelf life.It depends on changes in viscosity and physical appearance of the adhesive to provide indications of inade-Paperboard4 These test methods are under the jurisidiction of ASTM Committee DI4 on Adhesives and are the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D14.20 on Durability.Current edition approved Oct.28,1983.Published Febmary 1984.ReplacesD1174-51(1981).Discontinued,see 1983 Annual Book of ASTMStandards,Vol of using this pro-cedure.This method is not suitable for use with mastic adhesives or with dry adhesives that are mixed with water at the time of use.4.2 The test for the resistance of adhesive films to bacterial attack(Section 14),provide an indi-cation of whether the adhesive will carry into the glue line sufficient antimicrobial properties to prevent attack by bacteria.See 1.2 for limitations on the effectiveness of this test.5.Apparatus 5.1 Antibiotic Sensitivity Disks,0.5 in.(13 mm)in diameter.5.2 Cylinder,500-mL capacity, graduated in 5-mL subdivisions.5.3 Constant Temperature Chamber, capable of being maintained at 95 f 1F(35 f OST)or 77 f 1F(25 f OST);or two chambers if needed simultaneously.5.4 Desiccators, two about i0 in.(254 mm)in inside diameter and 8 in.(203 mm)in height, with perforated porcelain plates to support the culture plates.5.5 Glass Rods,i2 in.(305 mm)in length, having a diameter of 0.25 in.(6.3 mm).5.6 Glass Rod,L-shaped,having the same dimensions as in 5.5,bent into an L at 2.75 in.(70 mm).5.7 Jar,round,i qt mason ja
