Designation:D 5332 00Standard Test Method forFiber Length and Length Distribution of Cotton Fibers1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5332;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method can be used to determine the fiberlength and length distribution of staple fibers of 100 mm(4 in.)or less, using the Fiber Length Measuring Unit AL-101.Itincludes determination of the fiber length parameters for loosefibers, carded slivers, drawn slivers, finisher slivers, combedslivers, and roving.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specificprecautionary statements, see 8.1.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 123 Terminology Relating to Textiles2D 1440 Test Method for Length and Length Distribution ofCotton Fibers(Array processes.3.1.6 horseshoe,na length of sliver folded in a mannersuch that the two ends can be fed simultaneously into theneedle field of the Fibroliner FL-101.3.1.7 length distribution, nof staple fibers,a graphic ortabular presentation of the proportion or percent(by number orweight)of fibers having different lengths.3.1.8 one-percent length(L1%N),nin fiber testing, thelength exceeded by 1%of the number of fibers in a testspecimen.3.1.9 ratch-setting by number(L1%N),nthe basis forsetting roll spacing in the drafting zone, namely, the lengthexceeded by 1%of the number of fibers in a test specimen.3.1.10 short-fiber content(SFC),nthat percentage offibers(by number or weight)in a test specimen that is shorterthan 12.5 mm(0.5 in.)in length.3.1.11 test beard, nin length testing of cotton, the portionof the test specimen that has been combed and brushed into a“beard”which protrudes from the outside of the comb(s)orclamp(s).3.1.12 upper-quartile length(UQL),nthat length that isexceeded by 25%of the fibers by either weight or number ina test specimen.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Lay loose fibers parallel to form a laboratory sample forprocessing on the Fibroliner FL-101.Feed the laboratorysample into the needle field of the FL-101.The FL-101straightens and aligns the fiber to form a test specimen.Transfer the straightened and aligned test specimen to the FiberLength Measuring Unit AL-101.Protected between two foils, the drawer moves the test specimen through the condenser(capacitor)slot. The condenser scans the fibers of the testspecimen every 0.125 mm(0.005 in.).The fiber-length distri-butions and all length parameters of the fiber in the testspecimen are computed from these data. All data can be readfrom the built-in display or printed with the printer.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method provides objective measurements forfiber length and length distribution in a sample of short-staplefibers.The results of the fiber distribution are presented on the1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D13 on Textilesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D13.11 on Cotton Fibers.Current edition approved fiber-lengthdistribution in ginning and mill processing.5.2 This test method covers sampling procedures from loosefibers through roving. It is therefore possible to measure thefiber-length distribution after every production step and com-pare the results. This allows finding optimum machine settingsand chec
