aggregates thatcontain components susceptible to hydration and consequentvolume increase,such as the free calcium and magnesiumoxides that occur in some industrial by-products.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard.The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore,eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.NOTE1Sieve size is identified by its standard designation in Speci-fication E11.The alternative designation given in parentheses is forinformation only and does not represent a different standard sieve size.1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnoteswhich provide explanatory material.These onmaximum density determination using Test Methods D698.Toaccelerate the hydration reaction,specimens are stored in waterat 70 6 3 C 158 6 5 F for a minimum of seven days.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method provides a procedure for determiningthe compliance of steel slags and other materials withspecifications,such as Specification D2940/D2940M,that limitpermissible expansion of base and subbase aggregates contain-ing components subject to hydration.4.2 This test method can also be used to evaluate theeffectiveness of aging or other treatments for reducing theexpansive potential of
