Designation:D 4743 92(Reapproved 1996)Standard Test Method forEfficacy of Solvent Systems for Dissolving Water-FormedDeposits1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 4743;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the efficacyof solvent systems for dissolving either water-formed depositsthat have been removed from the underlying material orsynthetically prepared deposits.1.2 The nature of this test method is such that statements ofprecision and bias as determined by round robin tests couldmislead users of the test method(see Sections 11 and 12).Therefore,no precision and bias statements are made.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 887 Practices for Sampling Water-Formed Deposits2D 1129 Terminology Relating to Water3D 1193 Specification for Reagent water-formed deposits(Note 1)any accumulation ofinsoluble material derived from water or formed by thereaction of water upon the surface in contact with the water.NOTE1Deposits formed from or by water in all its phases may befurther classified as scale, sludge, corrosion products,or biologicaldeposits. The overall composition of a deposit or some part of a depositmay be determined by chemical or spectrographic analysis;the constitu-ents actually present as chemical substances may be identified bymicroscope or X-ray diffraction studies.Organisms may be identified bymicroscopical or biological methods.3.1.2 For definitions of other terms used in this test method, refer to Terminology D 1129.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 solvent systemspecified chemicals or combinationsof chemicals that may include corrosion inhibitors, formulatedto react with and remove deposits.3.2.2 single and multiple solvent systemsa single solventsystem is a one-solution treatment.A multiple solvent sys-tem is a treatment using two or more solutions in sequence.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 This test method determines the ability of solventsystems to dissolve deposits.4.2 This test method consists of exposing weighed amountsof deposits to solvent systems and determining the weight lossof the exposed deposit, thereby determining the efficacy of thesolvent system.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method is useful because the choice of asolvent system for removing water-formed deposits dependsprimarily upon the ability of the solvent system to dissolve thedeposit. It is used for evaluating solvent systems on water-formed deposits that have been removed from the underlyingmaterial.6.Apparatus6.1 BalanceCapable of weighing to the nearest 0.1 mg.6.2 Constant Temperature BathThermostatically con-trolled to 61C(62F)and provided with suitable openingsand supports for the test containers.6.3 Test ContainersTall form,220-mL,lipless,polypro-pylene beakers. They shall be fitted with tight covers.A smallslit(approximately 13 mm(12in.)in length)shall be made ineach cover.6.4 Glass Filter CruciblesGooch 30-mL low form coarsefritted disk crucibles.6.5 Vacuum Oven, for drying residual deposits.6.6 Desiccator.6.7 Mild Steel CouponA clean, mild steel coupon,nomi-nally 25 by 50 by 1.5 mm(1 by 2 by116in.)used for1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM
