Designation:D 4947 00Standard Test Method forChlordane and Heptachlor Residues in Indoor Air1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 4947;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the sampling and analysis ofindoor atmospheres for residues of chlordane and heptachlor.1.2 This test method is based upon the collection of chlor-dane and heptachlor from air onto polyurethane foam(PUF)and analysis by gas chromatography coupled with electroncapture detection.1.3 This test method is applicable to concentrations ofchlordane varying from 0.1 to 100 g/m3and heptachlorvarying from 0.01 to 80.0 g/m3with sampling periods tocollect at least 0.25 m3of air.Detection limits will dependupon the conditions of the gas chromatography(GC)and thelength of the sampling period.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 technical-grademixture consisting mostly of chlorinated Diels-Alder additionproducts of cyclopentadiene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene. The mixture consists of 50 or more compounds,10 of whichare major components(1).6The isomers a-(or cis-)and g-(ortrans-)chlordane,heptachlor,and trans-nonachlor are amongthese.3.1.2.1 The terms“chlordane”and“technical”chlordaneare used interchangeably.3.1.3 Heptachlor is a single chemical compound, which maybe used alone or in formulations with technical chlordane. It isalso a component of technical chlordane.4.Summary of Practice4.1 A low-volume(1 to 5 L/min)sampler is used to collectairborne chlordane and heptachlor on a sorbent cartridgecontaining PUF.The method is taken from Refs.(2)through(4)and Practice D 4861.4.2 Chlordane and heptachlor are extracted from the sorbentcartridge with 5%diethyl ether in hexane and analyzed on agas chromatograph(GC)equipped with an electron capturedetector(ECD).1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D22 on Samplingand Analysis of Atmospheres and is the direct responsibility of SubcommitteeD22.05 on Indoor Air.Current edition approved March 10,2000.Published June 2000.Originallypublished Infor-mation Service,Port Royal Road,Springfield,VA 22161.5Available from Wood Protection Council,National Institute for BuildingSciences,Washington,DC,1987.6The boldface numbers in parentheses refer to the list of references at the end ofthis standard.1Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.4.3 Because of the possibility of interfering materials hav-ing similar retention times to chlordane and heptachlor peaks, column chromatography or the use of a second chromato-graphic column of a different type is necessary to obtainaccurate identification and quantification.Mass spectrometrymay be required for unambiguous determination.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method is intended to be used primarily fornon-occupational exposure monitoring in domiciles, publicaccess buildings and offices.5.2 Chlordane has been used widely as a general insecticidefor crops(for example, cotton)and as a termiticide.Heptachloris a major component of technical chlordane and an insecticidein its own right.Although their use in the United States wasdiscontinued in 1988,residues of the chemicals may remain inindoor air for many years after application.6.Interferences6.1 The electron capture detector responds to a wide
