Designation:D5716/D5716M20Standard Test Method forMeasuring the Rate of Well Discharge by Circular OrificeWeir1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5716/D5716M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope*1.1 This test method covers construction and operation of acircular orifice weir for measuring the discharge from a well. This test method is a part of a series of standards prepared onthe in situ determination of hydraulic properties of aquifersystems by single-or multiple-well tests.Selection of a welldischarge measurement test method is described in GuideD5737M.1.2 The discharge rate determined by this test method iscommonly used for a number of aquifer test methods and toprovide information for the evaluation of well and pumpperformance.1.3 LimitationsThis test method is limited to the descrip-tion of a method common to hydraulic engineering for thepurpose of groundwater discharge measurement in temporaryor test conditions.1.4 Much of the information presented in this test method isbased on work performed by the Civil Engineering Departmentof Purdue University during the late 1940s.The essentials ofthat work have been presented in a pamphlet prepared byLayne-Bowler,Inc.2and updated by Layne Western Company,Inc.31.5 All observed and calculated values shall be conform tothe guidelines for significant digits and rounding established inPractice D6026.1.5.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded and calculated in this standard are regarded as theindustry standard. In addition they are representative of thesignificant digits that should generally be retained. The proce-dures used do not consider material variation, purpose forobtaining the data, special purpose studies,or any consider-ations for the users objectives;and it is common practice toincrease or reduce significant digits of reported data to becommensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scopeof this document to consider significant digits sused analysismethods for engineering design.1.6 UnitsThe values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard.Thevalues stated in each system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.Reporting of test results inunits other than SI shall not be regarded as nonconformancewith this standard.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced
