Designation:D463411aStandard Classification System and Basis for Specification forStyrene-Maleic Anhydride Molding and Extrusion Materials(S/MA)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4634;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope*1.1 This classification system covers styrene-maleic anhy-dride materials suitable for molding or extrusion. This classi-fication system does not apply to alloys or blends of styrene-maleicanhydridematerialswithnon-elastomericthermoplastics.Styrene-maleic anhydride materials, beingthermoplastic, are reprocessable and recyclable. This classifi-cation system allows for the use of those materials providedthat all the specific requirements of this classification systemare met.1.2 The properties included in this standard are thoserequired to identify the compositions covered.Other require-ments necessary to identify particular characteristics importantto specialized applications are to be specified by using thesuffixes as given in Section 5.1.3 This classification system and subsequent line call out(specification)are intended to provide means of calling outproperties of plastic materials used in the fabrication of enditems or parts. It is not intended for the selection of materials.Materials should be selected by those having expertise in theplastics field after careful consideration of the design and theperformance required of the part, the environment to which itwill be exposed, the fabrication process to be employed, costsinvolved, and the inherent properties of the material other thanthose covered by this classification system.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard.1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to thetest methods portion,Section 11,of this classification system. This standard does not purport to address all of the safetyconcerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety andhealth practices and determine the applicability of regulatorylimitations prior to use.NOTE1There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D256 Test Methods for Determining the Izod anhydride materials are classified intogroups according to their use either for injection molding, orfor extrusion. These groups are subdivided into classes andgrades,as shown in Table S/MA.NOTE2An example of this classification system is as follows:Thedesignation S/MA 211 would indicate:S/MA=Styrene-maleic anhydride,2=inj
