Designation:D542709(Reapproved 2014)Standard Practice forAccelerated Aging of Inflatable Restraint Fabrics1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5427;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice describes the procedures for the acceler-ated aging of inflatable restraint fabrics when required as apreparatory step for other test methods.1.1.1 In Section 7,this practice lists four methods forconducting accelerated aging that are of concern to the designand manufacture of inflatable restraints. They are as follows:DescriptionSectionCycle aging(Option“A”or“B”)8.4Heat aging(Option“A”or“B”)8.4.3.1Humidity aging(Option“A”or“B”)8.7Ozone aging8.81.2 This practice may be used in conjunction with otherASTM test methods when subsequent tests of physical prop-erties are required of aged fabric specimens.1.3 Procedures and apparatus other than those stated in thispractice may be used by agreement between the purchaser andthe supplier with the specific deviations from the standardpractice acknowledged in the report.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system are not exact equivalents;therefore, each systemmust be used independently of the other.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D123 Terminology Relating to TextilesD1776 Practice for Conditioning and Testing TextilesD6799 in the standard atmosphere for test-ing textiles, test specimens are subjected to accelerated agingfor heat, humidity, ozone,or cycling.4.2 Aged specimens are then reconditioned in the standardatmosphere for testing textiles for subsequent testing of thephysical properties of inflatable restraint fabrics.5.Significance and Use5.1 For inflatable restraints, practices for conducting accel-erated aging are designed to determine the aggravated effectson a fabric from exposures to heat, humidity,or ozone,or acombination thereof. These environmental conditions may alsobe cycled in combination. The four accelerated aging proce-dures of concern to the design and manufacture of inflatablerestraints are referred to as cycle aging, heat aging, humidityaging, and ozone aging.5.2 The environmental conditions described in this practiceare designed to allow restraints so that reliable comparisonsmay be made between different fabrics and different laborato-ries.5.3 In order to achieve precise and reliable physical prop-erty comparisons of different fabrics,it is necessary to control1This practice is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D13 on Textiles andis the direct responsibility of Subcommittee therequirements of test methods to be conducted on the specimenssubsequent to accelerated aging.5.5 Unless otherwise specified by agreement between thepurchaser and the supplier, this practice shall constitute theconditions, procedures, and equipment by which inflatablerestraint fabrics are conditioned and aged.It is intended to beused as a guideline in establishing a written material
