immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONIt is not possible to gather a sample of a multi-ton lot of refuse derived fuel(RDF)with assurancethat the sample is representative of the lot.Therefore,this test method has been developed wherebya series of twenty samples are analyzed over the course of a month and the average of the results arean empirical estimate that is adequate to be used to represent the RDF production over that month.This test method may be used to ascertain RDF quality for purposes of contractual adjustment betweenproducer and user.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the procedure for collection ofa series of 20 gross samples for analyses.The results ofanalysis,when averaged,are deemed representative of the lotor a production stream for a 1-month period.1.2 This test method may be used to determine fuel qualityon other than a monthly basis if 20 gross samples are gathered,analyzed and averaged.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard.The values given in parentheses are forinformation only.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the States.6.Apparatus6.1 Conveyor Belt Sample Dividermade of two verticalwall members have a profile matching that of the top of thebelt,and having a space between the two walls not less thanthree times the top nominal particle size of the RDF is required.6.2 Conveyor Stream Sampling Devicea container with ahandle or mechanism to control insertion and withdrawal,suitable for collecting a representative sample from a stream ofmaterial falling from the discharge end of a conveyor isneeded.It shall have dimensions not less than three times thesize of the top nominal particle size(95%passing)of the RDF,to avoid bridging and rejection of large particles.6.3 Sample Container 3-mil polyethylene bags,doublebagged,properly sealed,or noncorroding buckets or barrelswith airtight covers,of sufficient size to hold the samples isrequired.7.Hazards7.1 Due to the origins of municipal solid waste,workersshall use proper safety precautions in handling samples andconducting tests.Workers shall wear gloves and safety glasses,and when appropriate,dust masks.Workers shall be cautionedto wash their hands before eating,smoking or handlinggenitalia.7.2 Appropriate safety precautions shall be taken whenworking on or near equipment in collecting samples,due to thepossibility of getting objects or clothing caught in movingequipme
