Designation:D480094(Reapproved 2015)Standard Guide forClassifying and Specifying Adhesives1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4800;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide provides a classification system for tabulat-ing the properties of adhesives suitable for holding parts orassemblies together. The use of this guide also providesinformation necessary for the development of standard speci-fications for adhesives.NOTE1This classification system may serve many of the needs ofindustries using adhesives. This guide is subject to revision as the needrequires;therefore, the latest revision should always be used.1.2 LimitationsThis classification system is intended to bea means of identifying adhesives. It is not intended for theselection of materials.Material selection should be made bythose having expertise in the adhesives field after carefulconsideration of the design and the performance required of thepart, the environment to which it will be exposed, the attach-ment process to be employed, the inherent properties of thematerial not covered in this document, and the economicfactors.1.3 This classification system is based on the premise thatadhesives can be arranged into broad generic families usingbasic properties to arrange the materials into groups, classes, and grades.1.4 In all cases where the provisions of this classificationsystem would conflict with the referenced ASTM specificationfor a particular material, the latter shall take precedence.1.5 The values stated in SI units,as detailed in IEEE/ASTMSI 10,are to be regarded as the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D907 Terminology of AdhesivesD1084 Test Methods for Viscosity of purpose of this classification system is to provide amethod of identifying adhesives in order to give industry asystem that can be used universally for materials. It furtherprovides a means for specifying these materials by the use ofthe standards that are developed using this guide.4.2 This classification system was developed to permit theaddition of future adhesives.1This guide is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D14 on Adhesives andis the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D14.60 on Adhesive Material Classi-fication System.Current edition approved Sept.1,2015.Published generic family is identified by letterdesignations as found in Table 1.NOTE2For example:CA=Cyanoacrylate.5.2.1 The generic family is based on the broad chemicalmakeup of the base materials.By its designation, certaininherent properties are specified.5.3 The generic family is classified into groups according,in general,to the chemical composition. These groups arefurther subdivided into classes and grades,as shown in thebasic property table that applies. The letter designation appli-cable is followed by a four-digit number indicat
