Designation:D4552/D4552M10Standard Practice forClassifying Hot-Mix Recycling Agents1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4552/D4552M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers a standardized method wherebypetroleum product additives to be used in hot recycling ofasphalt concrete can be identified. The products are classifiedby viscosity in mm2/s measured at 60C 140F.This practicedoes not apply to emulsified materials.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D70 Test Method for Density of Construction3.Significance and Use3.1 Recycling of deteriorated asphalt pavements is beingused with increasing frequency for its economy and benefit ofconserving raw materials. The objective of recycling is to reusethe two ingredients of asphalt concrete-aggregate and asphaltand to restore the desired properties to the mixture.Recyclingis carried out hot or cold, depending on the condition of thedeteriorated pavement, construction procedure, availability ofequipment, and cost. This practice is for classifying recyclingagents to be used in hot recycling.4.Classification4.1 This practice describes recycling agents(RA)as belong-ing to one of the following six groups:RA1,RA5,RA25,RA75,RA 250,or RA 500,as shown in Table 1.The viscosityranges are designed to avoid overlap and to provide sufficientflexibility to satisfy a wide range of mix proportions.Otherproperties specified include flash point(handling),weightpercent of saturates(compatibility),selected properties of theRTF or TF oven residue(durability),and specific gravity.4.2 The choice of RA grade will depend on the amount andhardness of the asphalt in the aged pavement. In general, thelower viscosity RA types can be used to restore aged asphaltsof high viscosity and vice versa.Additionally, grades RA1,RA5,RA 25,and RA 75 will generally be most appropriate forhot-mix recycling of salvaged asphalt concrete when no morethan 30%virgin aggregate is added, while grades RA 250 andRA 500 will generally be most appropriate when more than30%virgin aggregate is incorporated into the mix.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04 on Road andPaving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D04.40 onAsphalt Specifications.Current edition approved June 15,2010.Published July 2010.Originallyapproved in 1986.Last previous edition approved in 2004 as D455292(2004).DOI:10.1520/D4552_D4552M-10.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM therequirements shown in Table 1.5.2 The final acceptance of recycling agents meeting therequirements shown in Table 1 is subject to the compliance ofthe reconstituted asphalt blends with current asphalt specifica-tions.6.Sampling6.1 All sampling shall be carried out in accordance withPractice D140.ASTM
