Designation:D 5714 95(Reapproved 2002)Standard Specification forContent of Digital Geospatial Metadata1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5714;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers the information content ofmetadata for a set of digital geospatial data. This specificationprovides a common set of terminology and definitions forconcepts related to these metadata.1.2 The use of the term“geographic information system”and its definition in this specification is not intended tointroduce a standard definition.1.3 This specification covers minimum content and process-ing requirements for geospatial metadata.1.4 There are at least three categories of use for geospatialmetadata:(1)to accompany data transfers as documentation,(2)internal,on-line documentation of processing steps anddata lineage,and(3)as stand-alone data set synopses for use byspatial data catalogs, indexes, and referral services.2.Referenced Documents2.1ANSI Standards:ANSI X3.51 Representations of Universal Time,LocalTime Differentials, and United States Time Zone Refer-ence for Information Interchange2ANSI X3.30 Representation for Calendar Date and OrdinalDate for Information Interchange2ANSI Z39.50 Information Retrieval Service Protocol forOpen Systems RasterGraphics(ADRG)43.Terminology3.1 abscissathe coordinate of a point in a plane cartesiancoordinate system obtained by measuring parallel to the x-axis(“the 8x value”).3.2 accuracythe degree of conformity of a measured orcalculated value to some recognized standard or specifiedvalue. This concept involves the systematic and random errorof an operation.3.3 altitudeelevation above or below a reference datum,as defined in Federal Information Processing Standard 70-1.See also elevation.3.4 areaa generic term for a bounded,continuous,two-dimensional object that may or may not include its boundary.3.5 area chaina chain that explicitly references left andright polygons and not start and end nodes. It is a componentof a two-dimensional manifold.3.6 area pointa representative point within an area usu-ally carrying attribute information about that area.3.7 attributea defined characteristic of an entity type(forexample,composition).3.8 attribute valuea specific quality or quantity assignedto an attribute(for example, steel),for a specific entityinstance.3.9 chaina directed non-branching sequence of non-intersecting line segments or arcs bounded by nodes,or both, not necessarily distinct,at each end.Area chain, completechain, and network chain are special cases of chain, and shareall characteristics of the general case as defined above.3.10 complete chaina chain that explicitly references leftand right polygons and start and end nodes. It is a componentof a two-dimensional manifold.3.11 compound elementa group of data elements andother compound elements.Compound elements representhigher-level concepts that cannot be represented by individualdata elements.3.12 coordinatespairs of numbers expressing horizontaldistances along orthogonal axes;alternatively, triplets of num-bers measuring horizontal and vertical distances.3.13 data elementa logically primitive item of data.3.14 data seta file or files that contain related geometricand attribute information;a collection of related data.3.15 depthperpendicular distance of an interior pointfrom the surface of an object.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D18 on Soiland Rock and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D18.01 on Surface andSubsurface Characterization.Current edition approved April 15,1995.Published January 1996.2Available from American National Standards cones and cylinders.3.17 digital imagea two-dimensional array of regularlyspaced picture elements(pixels)constituting a picture.3.18 digital volumea three-dimensional array of regularlyspaced volume elements(voxels)constituting a volume.3.19 domainin the definition of the elements in thisspecification, the domain identifie
