Designation:D570218Standard Practice forField Sampling of Coating Films for Analysis for HeavyMetals1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5702;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers a method to control the removal ofsamples of coating films from substrates for subsequent labo-ratory analysis for heavy metal content on a mass basis.Thistechnique can be used in the field, the fabricating shop,orlaboratory.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specific hazard information, see Section 5,Note 1,andNote 3.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D4138 Practices for Applied to Non-Ferrous Metals3.Significance and Use3.1 Prior to beginning a project that involves the removal, cutting, grinding,or burning of paint,it is necessary todetermine if the coating contains hazardous metals, such aslead. If it does, certain requirements for worker and environ-mental protection may need to be imposed. The presence andquantity of hazardous metals in a paint can be determinedthrough laboratory analysis.Proper sampling protocol isneeded to assure the laboratory results represent the actualamount of heavy metal in the coating. The number and locationof samples to be removed must also be determined to charac-terize properly the extent of the presence of hazardousmaterials,if any,on a structure.4.Materials and Equipment4.1 Sample Collection ContainerA clean plastic bag orrigid container comprised of a material such as polyethylenethat will not contaminate the sample.4.2 Straight Edge or Ruler.4.3 Knife or Chisel, cleaned and sharpened, for removingpaint samples.4.4 Dry Film Thickness Gage, for measuring total coatingthickness.5.Procedure5.1 Select a sufficient number of areas for coating removalthat properly characterize the coatings on the structure.5.1.1 Selection may be based on painting history,knowl-edge of previously applied coatings, prior touch-up and re-painting programs, and other such factors.5.1.2 Select areas that properly characterize the range ofthickness found.Dry film thickness can be measured inaccordance with Test Methods D4138,D6132,or PracticeD7091.5.1.3 Remove a minimum of three samples.5.2 At each sample site, clean the surface of dirt,dust,ordebris.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paint andRelated Coatings,Materials, and Applications and is the direct responsibility removed during cleaning. Thus, consideration shouldbe given to collecting this surface debris and chalk for analysis.5.3 At each sample site, use a knife and straight edge toscribe the perimeter of a square through the coating film to thesubstrate. The square should be of sufficient size to give a onegram sample.NOTE2Paint w
