Designation:D555619Standard Test Method forDetermination of the Moisture and Other Volatile MatterContained in Fats and Oils Used in Fatliquors and SofteningCompounds1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5556;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of moistureand other volatile material under conditions of the test.It isapplicable to all fats, oils, and fatliquors used in the softeningand stuffing of leather.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:E177 Practice for Use of the Terms Precision and Bias inASTM Test MethodsE691 Practice for Conducting an Interlaboratory Study toDetermine the Precision of a Test Method3.Significance and Use3.1 This test method is intended for use in the determinationof the moisture and other volatile matter contained in fats, oils, and fatliquors used in the softening and stuffing of leather, aswell as those used in the manufacture of products for suchpurpose.4.Apparatus4.1 Electric Hot Plate, with uniform heat transfer across thesurface, chemical and scratch resistant.4.2 Glass Beakers,100 to 150 mL.4.3 Desiccator, containing an efficient desiccant.5.Procedure5.1 Accurately weigh 5 to 10 g of a well-mixed sample intoa tared beaker that has been previously dried and cooled in adesiccator. Then heat the sample on the hot plate, slowlyincreasing to medium temperature-settings,rotating the beakergently,by hand,to avoid spattering that may result from toorapid ebullition of moisture. If an excess of spattering occurs, the experiments should be stopped and another techniqueshould be used.5.2 Judge the approach of the end-point by the cessation ofthe rising bubbles of steam as well as by the absence of foam.Another good method of judging the end-point is to place aclean, dry watch glass on top of the beaker. The evolution ofsteam is indicated by condensation on the watch glass.Thetemperature of the sample shall at no time be allowed to exceed130C,except at the end of test.5.3 When the apparent end-point has been reached, heat thesample momentarily to the point of incipient smoking, usingcaution not to overheat, and then cool to room temperature ina desiccator and weigh.6.Calculation and Report6.1 Report the moisture and volatile matter in percent, byweight, employing the calculation:%Volatile matter moisture!=S 1 B!2 DS#3100(1)where:S=initial sample weight,B=weight of empty beaker, andD=weight of dried sample plus beaker.6.2 Reference this test method in the test report.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D31 on Leatherand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D31.08 on Fats and Oils. This testmethod was developed in cooperation with the American Leather Chemists Assn.(Method H 201957).Current edition approved Nov.1,2019.Published December 2019.Originallyapproved in 1994.Last previous edition approved in 2011 as D5556 95(2011).DOI:10.1520/D5556-19.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.7.Precision and Bias7.1 The precision of this test method is based on aninter-laboratory study of ASTM D5556,Determination of theMoisture and Other Volatile Matter Contained in Fats and OilsUsed in Fatliquors and Softening Compounds2conducted in2019.Six laboratories tested five leather oils.Every“testresult”represents an individual determination, and all partici-pants reported three replicate test results per material.PracticeE691 was followed for the design of the study and analysis ofthe data;the details are given in an ASTM Research Report.27.1.1 Repeatability limit(r)The difference between repeti-tive results obtained by the same operator in a given laboratoryapplying the
