Designation:D 6315 98e1Standard Practice forManual Sampling of Coal from Tops of Barges1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6315;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.e1NOTEParagraph 6.3.3 has been editorially corrected by adding Eq 1 in January 2001.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for obtaining a manualgross sample from the surface of coal contained in barges. These procedures are used to provide gross samples for generalanalysis and for estimating quality and total moisture.Thegross sample is to be crushed and further prepared for analysisin accordance with Test Method D 2013.1.2 The user is cautioned that samples of this type do notsatisfy the minimum requirements for probability samplingand,as such, cannot be used to calculate such statisticalinferences as the precision, standard error,or bias.1.3 This sampling method is used only when sampling bymethods that provide a probability sample is not possible.1.4 The quantities stated in either acceptable SI units or ininch-pound units are regarded separately as standard.Thequantities stated in each system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, each system must be used independently of the other, without combining quantities in any way.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 121 Terminology of Coal and Coke2D 2013 Method of Preparing Coal Samples for Analysis2D 2234 Practice for Collection of a Gross Sample of Coal2D 4749 method, refer toTerminology D 121.4.Summary of Practice4.1 Obtaining a manual sample of a stationary lot of bargecoal is accomplished by collecting increments from the surfacelayer(s)of coal in the barge for the purpose of acquiring a grosssample.5.Significance and Use5.1 The guidelines, cautions, and suggested procedurespresented here are intended to aid in the proper planning ofbarge top sampling of coal transported in barges, taking intoaccount the wide variety of conditions that may be encoun-tered.5.2 When agreed upon by all interested parties, theseguidelines provide procedures for collecting gross samplesfrom the top layer(s)of coal in barges;these samples thenbeing further processed to provide subsamples for requiredlaboratory estimations.5.3 This guide provides instructions for sampling only thetop 18 to 24 in.(46 to 61 cm)of a barge. The user is cautionedthat samples so obtained do not typify material below the pointof penetration. If a barge is already loaded with coal and theuser suspects different coals or quality were layered duringdifferent passes or stages of loading, the barge should only besampled as it is unloaded using Conditions A or B in PracticeD 2234.6.Procedure6.1 Whenever sampling is conducted using this practice, allparties with an interest in the outcome of the results shouldagree upon all the relevant details of this process.Theseinclude, but are not limited to:lot size;number and mass ofincrements;the size, shape, and manipulation of the incrementcollection devices;location of increment collection site orsites;circumstances under which increments are not to becollected or can be suspended;and safety precautions. It ispreferable that such agreements be in writing.6.2 Lot SizeAll interested parties shall agree before sam-pling begins to the size of the lot to be represented by one grosssample.Section 7 of Practice D 2234 is the proper reference forobtaining a probability sample and,for the purpose of unifor-mity,may be used as a guide for barge top sampling.6.3 IncrementsBefore sampling a lot of coal,a visual1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D05 on Coal andCoke possible size segregationwithin each barge should be performed.Notes should be madein a sampling log to reflect these observations. The notes couldbe useful in understanding differences of analytical test resultsor in identifying changes in loading characteristics.(For thepurpose of uniformity it is recommended th
