Designation:D 5841 00Standard Specification forType III Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement for Use inPavement Construction1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5841;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers asphalt cements that have beenmodified by the addition of the appropriate polymer for use inpavement construction.It was developed to provide a referencefor specifying polymer modified asphalt and reflects theproperties of currently available commercial products.Thetests are intended to measure compatibility and degree ofmodification,not performance characteristics.This is notintended to be a performance based specification.1.2 Type III polymer-modified asphalts are typically madewith ethyl vinyl acetate.However any polymer may be usedthat will give the required test results when blended with thedesired asphalt.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine Test for Type III Polymer Modified Asphalt:5.1.1 Scope:5.1.1.1 This test is a simple qualitative test for compatibilityof low density polymers in asphalt.5.2 Apparatus:5.2.1 ContainersStandard 6 oz metal sample cups(1.875in.high by 2.75 in.inside diameter).5.2.2 OvenAn oven capable of maintaining 275 6 10F(135 6 5C).5.3 Procedure:5.3.1 After a blend of polymer in asphalt has been preparedand is still at elevated temperature,pour enough of the mix intoa clean 6 oz metal test cup to fill it to the formed roll on the cup(approximately14in.from the top).Place the sample in acontrolled temperature oven at 275F(135C)for 15 to 18 h.Remove carefully from the oven without disturbing the surfaceand observe the sample.After the initial observation,a spatulacan be used to gently probe the sample and check consistencyof any surface layer and checkfor sludge on the bottom.Theseobservations and tests should be done while the sample is still1This specification is under the jurisdiction of
