Designation:D630617Standard Guide forPlacement and Use of Diffusive Samplers for GaseousPollutants in Indoor Air1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6306;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide covers the placement and use of diffusivesamplers in an indoor environment.1.2 The primary use of diffusive samplers is to measure theexposure concentrations of specific gaseous air contaminantsfor occupants in a variety of indoor environments.1.3 Diffusive samplers within this guide are used to measureconcentrations of air contaminants in residences, publicbuildings, offices, and other non-industrial environments.Adiffusive sampler is any air sampler that does not utilizeelectrical or mechanical power in order to supply air to thesorbent media or chemical reactant within the sampler and thatsamples according to Ficks first law of diffusion.1.4 The purpose of this guide is to ensure uniformity ofsampling within a variety of indoor environments and tofacilitate comparison of results.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.7 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1356 Terminology Relating to Sampling and Analysis ofAtmospheresD1357 Practice for Planning the to Terminology D1356.4.Summary of Guide4.1 Contaminants in air are sampled by collection with asorbent or chemically reactive medium in order to undergosubsequent analysis for determination of concentration.Con-taminants in air are transported to the sorption medium orreacting chemical through vapor or gas diffusion.During thesampling process, the compounds,in a molecular state, diffusefrom the environment adjacent to the sampler through a firstregion of defined geometric structure and into a secondadsorbing region containing the sorbent.Samplers are resealedat the end of the exposure period and sent to a laboratory foranalysis.4.2 Guidance is provided for the placement, handling, anduse of diffusive samplers within an indoor environment.5.Significance and Use5.1 Diffusive samplers provide a useful sampling option forstudying time-weighted average indoor air concentrations of1This guide is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D22 on AirQuality and is the direct issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.1 vapor-phase pollutants. They are easy and cost-effective todeploy enabling the collection of relatively large data sets.5.2 The objective of this guide is to provide guidance for theplacement and use of diffusive samplers that when uniformlyapplied enables the user to eliminate many potential interfer-ences that may occur in diffusive sampling of indoor air.Sincethe analysis of the indoor environment by diffusive sampling isinfluenced by many factors other than the method of sampling, efforts are made to minimize interfering factors and maintainthe air at conditions typical of the measurement loca
