Designation:D6164/D6164M21Standard Specification forStyrene Butadiene Styrene(SBS)Modified BituminousSheet Materials Using Polyester Reinforcements1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6164/D6164M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers prefabricated modified bitumi-nous sheet materials reinforced with polyester fabric as theprimary reinforcement(see Note 1),with or without granules, which use styrene butadiene styrene(SBS)thermoplasticelastomer as the primary modifier and are intended for use inthe fabrication of multiple ply roofing and waterproofingmembranes.NOTE1Many modified bituminous sheets are currently marketed withpolyester mat reinforced with glass yarns to improve processing in themanufacture of the finished modified bitumen product and to reducedistortions that may be introduced during production. These glass yarnsare typically a small percentage of the reinforcement and do not contributeto the physical properties of the finished product so much as to make theseproducts be classified by Specification D6162/D6162M.1.2 This specification is intended as a material specificationonly.Issues regarding the suitability of the specific roofconstructions or application techniques are beyond this scope.1.3 The specified tests and property limits used to charac-terize the sheet materials are intended to establish minimumproperties.In-place roof system design criteria, such as fireresistance, field strength,impact/puncture resistance, materialcompatibility, uplift resistance, and others, are factors beyondthe scope of this material specification.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the standard.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Terminology D1079.4.Classification4.1 Modified bituminous sheet materials reinforced withpolyester fabric,Type I and Type II,are covered by thisspecification.4.2 The following grades are used to describe the materialsurfacing:4.2.1 Grade GGranule surfaced.4.2.2 Grade SSmooth surfaced.5.Material and Manufacture5.1 In the process of manufacture, the reinforcement issaturated with asphalt or modified asphalt and is impregnatedand coated on both sides with an SBS-modified bituminouscoating. The SBS-modified bituminous coating shall be per-mitted to be compounded with a mineral stabilizer.5.2 The Grade G sheet is surfaced on the weather side withmineral granules, except for any selvage. To prevent sticking inthe roll, the reverse side and any selvage shall be permitted tobe covered with a fine mineral surfacing or any other surfacingthat will not interfere with adhesion or bonding of the lapduring application.5.3 Sheet material intended for application by heat welding(torching)shall meet the minimum bottom coating requirementfound in Table 1.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 onRoofing and Waterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.04on Felts,Fabrics and Bituminous Sheet Materials.Current edition approved Dec.1,2021.Published December 2021.Originallyapproved in 1997.Last previous edition
