Designation:D6136/D6136M15Standard Test Method forKerosine Number of Unsaturated(Dry)Felt by VacuumMethod1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6136/D6136M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relativesaturating capacity of unsaturated(dry)felt papers used inroofing.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D585 Practice for Sampling and Accepting a Single Lot ofPaper,Paperboard,Fiberboard, and Related Product(Withdrawn 2010)3D1298 Test Method for Density,Relative Density,or APIGravity of Crude Petroleum and Liquid Petroleum Prod-ucts by Hydrometer MethodD3699 Specification for Kerosine3.Summary of Test Method3.1 The kerosine number of unsaturated(dry)felt is com-puted from the weight of a kerosine of known specific gravityretained by the felt after displacement of the air from interiorvoids. It is the millilitres of kerosine held/100 g of felt, andthus,is a measure of the quantity of saturant that a given feltwill absorb.4.Significance and Use4.1 The ability to absorb kerosine is an indication of theability to absorb hot asphalt. The kerosine number is used incalculating saturation efficiency.5.Apparatus5.1 Glass Vessel, approximately 1500 mL capacity, forsoaking specimens of felt in kerosine, under vacuum.5.2 Vacuum Pump, capable of reaching and maintaining avacuum of at least 700 mm Hg in the glass vessel.5.3 Lightweight Glass or Metal Weighing Container, withtightly fitting cover,60 by 140 mm 2.5 by 5.5 in.or larger, tocontain felt strips in a horizontal position without bending ordistortion.5.4 Drying Oven, with dimensions at least 300 by 300 by300 mm 12 by 12 by 12 in.5.5 Other ApparatusDesiccator, wire hook, and ifnecessary,a punch to make a small hole in a corner of thespecimens after they are cut.6.Materials6.1 Water-White Kerosine, complying to the requirements ofSpecification D3699 and having a specific gravity of 0.800 60.025 at 25C,as determined in accordance with PracticeD1298.7.Sampling7.1 Obtain a sample of the felt in accordance with PracticeD585.8.Test Specimen8.1 From each test unit of the sample cut two sets of six testspecimen strips, each strip measuring 51 by 127 6 13 mm 2by 5 612in.with the longer side parallel to the machinedirection of the sheet.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D08 on Roofingand Waterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.04 on Felts,Fabrics and Bituminous Sheet Materials.Current edition approved Place a set of strips in the tared weighing container andexpose them, uncovered, for at least 1 but not more than 2 h inan oven, the interior of which is maintained at a temperature of105 6 3C.Keep the felt strips flat.Do not fold, roll,or distortthem in any way.Handle the six strips as a unit in all of thefollowing operations.9.2 Remove the strips in the weighing container from theoven and place them, with the container still uncovered,in adesiccator to cool.9.3 After cooling, rapidly close the container and weigh itwith enclosed strips to the nearest 10 mg to obtain the netweight of the dry strips.9.4 Insert a wire hook in one corner of the strips andimmerse them at once in a vertical position in 1000 mL ofkerosine at 25 6 1C in the glass vacuum vessel.Apply avacuum of at least 700 mm Hg to the vessel containing thestrips and hold it under these conditions for 15 min or for 5 minafter the bubbles cease to come from the felt strips, whicheverperiod is longer.Remove the felt strips from the kerosine andlet them drain in the machine direction of the felt
