Designation:D60582(Reapproved 2012)Standard Specification forMagnesium Silicate Pigment(Talc)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D605;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers pigments that consist substan-tially of natural hydrous magnesium silicate, and is restricted tothose minerals that conform to the chemical limits prescribedherein and can be suitably processed to what is commerciallyknown as paint pigment quality.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 The following hazard caveat applies to the test methodportion of this specification only. This standard does notpurport to address all of the safety concerns,if any, associatedwith its use.It is the responsibility of the user of this standardto establish appropriate safety and health practices anddetermine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior touse.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D280 Test Methods for Hygroscopic Moisture(and OtherMatter Volatile Under the Test Conditions)in magnesium and calcium sili-cates(MgO plus SiO2plus CaO)88.Calcium oxide(CaO).10Aluminum and iron oxides(R2O3).6Loss on ignition.7Moisture and other volatile material.13.2 ColorThe color shall be equal, within agreed upontolerances,to that of a reference sample agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the seller.3.3 Coarse ParticlesThe pigment shall contain no morethan 2%of coarse particles, retained on a 45-m(No.325)sieve except as may be agreed upon between the purchaser andthe seller.3.4 Water-Soluble MatterThe pigment shall contain nomore than 1%water-soluble matter except as may be agreedupon between the purchaser and the seller.3.5 Oil AbsorptionThe oil absorption shall be equal, within agreed upon tolerances,to that of a reference sampleagreed upon between the purchaser and the seller.3.6 ConsistencyWhen consistency is included in the pur-chasers specification,it shall be equal, within agreed upontolerances,to that of a reference sample agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the seller.3.7 FinenessThe paint fineness shall be equal, withinagreed upon tolerances,to that of a reference sample agreedupon between the purchaser and the seller.4.Sampling4.1 Two samples shall be taken at random from differentpackages from each lot, batch, days pack,or other unit ofproduction in a shipment. When no markings distinguishingbetween units of production appear, samples shall be takenfrom different packages in the ratio of two samples for each5000 kg(10 000 lb),except that for shipments of less than10 000 lb,two samples shall be taken. At the option of thepurchaser, the samples may be tested separately or after1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paintand Related Coatings,Materials, and Applications and is
