Designation:D607002(Reapproved 2010)Standard Test Methods forPhysical Properties of Smooth-Wall,Coilable,Polyethylene(PE)Conduit(Duct)for Preassembled Wire and Cable1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6070;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These test methods cover procedures for determiningthe environmental performance properties of smooth-wall,coilable,medium-density and high-density polyethylene(MDPE and HDPE)conduit(duct)for preassembled wire andcable.1.2 Whenever two sets of values are presented,in differentunits, the values in the first set are the standard, while those inparentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D2444 Test Method for Determination of the Impact Resis-tance of Thermoplastic Pipe and Fittings by Means of aTup(Falling Weight)3.Significance and Use3.1 Environmental performance test values for smooth-wall,coilable,medium density and high density polyethylene(MDPE and HDPE)conduit(duct)for preassembled wire andcable may provide data for research and development,engi-neering design, quality control, and acceptance or rejectionunder specifications.4.Procedure4.1 Performance TestsRemove electrical wire or cables,or both, from the duct before performing the following tests.4.2 Compression and RecoveryFlatten three specimens ofduct 6 in.(150 mm)long, that have been conditioned at 23 62C(73 6 4F)and 50 6 5%relative humidity for not lessthan 48 h,between parallel plates at a rate of 0.5 in./min(13mm/min)in a suitable press until the distance between theparallel plates has been decreased by 50%of the originalinside diameter of the duct.Be sure the specimens, the testapparatus, and the surrounding air are in thermal equilibriumwith one another at a temperature of 23 6 2C during the test. The minimum force required to compress the specimens to the50%deflection is shown in Table 1.Within 10 min afterremoval of the force, the specimens shall recover as specifiedin the individual product specification.4.3 Impact Test:4.3.1 Room-Temperature TestCut ten 6-in.(150-mm)specimens,from finished lengths of each size of coilable PEduct to be tested. The surfaces shall not have cracks, tears, orother imperfections. The specimens, the test apparatus, and thesurrounding air are to be in thermal equilibrium with oneanother at a temperature of 23 6 2C(73 6 4F)during thetest.Use the test apparatus and method described in 4.3.3.4.3.2 Low-Temperature TestCut ten 6-in.(150-mm)specimens,from finished lengths of each size of coilable PEduct to be tested. The surfaces shall not have cracks, tears, orother imperfections.Condition the specimens at a temperatureof 20 6 2C(4 6 4F)for 5 h.Condition the test apparatusat a temperate of 23 6 2C(73 6 4F).The test apparatus andmethod are described in 4.3.3.Remove the samples from thecold chamber and complete the impact test within 30 s.4.3.3 Test Method Test each specimen separately while itis resting on a solid, flat steel plate that has a nominal thicknessof at least 0.5 in.(12.5 mm)and that is firmly anchored with itsupper surface horizontal. It is recommended that a protectivecage surround the plates and specimens to prevent injury frompieces of broken duct in the event that the duct shatters.Allowa 20-lb(9-kg)Type B tup as described in Test Method D2444to fall freely through a vertical guide from the heights indicatedin Table 2.Allow the face of the tup to strike the center of thespecimen once(provide for preventing the tup from striking thespecimen more than once).Acrack or tear longer than 0.031 in.(0.8 mm)is considered a failure.1These test methods are under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F17 onPlastic Piping Systems and are the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F17.40 onTest Methods.Current edition approved Aug.1,2010.Published November 2010.Originallypublished as D6070-96.Last previous edition approved in 2002 as D6070-02.DOI:10.1520/D6070-02R10.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information, refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 5.Precision and Bias5.1 PrecisionThese test methods have been in use formany years, but no statements of precision have been made andno activity is planned to develop such a statement.5.2 BiasAstatement of bias is
