Designation:D 5908 96(Reapproved 2004)Standard Test Method forResin Binder Distribution and Binder Penetration Analysisof Polyester Nonwoven Fabrics1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5908;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the analysis of polyesterhighloft nonwoven fabrics for resin binder distribution andbinder penetration.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The inch-pound values given in parentheses are forinformation only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D 123 Terminology Relating to Textiles2.2 ASTM Adjuncts:ADJD5908 Photographic fabric,na low density fibernetwork structure characterized by a high ratio of thickness tomass per unit area.3.1.3 needle-punched batting,na textile filling materialthat is stabilized by mechanically entangling the fibers.3.1.4 resin binder, nemulsion polymer used for bonding.3.1.5 resin bonded batting,na textile filling material thatis stabilized by spraying it with an acrylic, polyvinyl acetate, orother suitable resin emulsion after which the batting is driedand cured.3.1.6 thermal bonded batting,na textile filling materialthat contains low-melting point fibers or polymer which, whenheated, fuse the batting materials together.3.1.6.1 DiscussionThermal bonded batting may also con-tain a resin binder.3.1.7 For definitions of other textile terms refer to Termi-nology D 123.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 A specimen of batting, either manufactured or from anend use product,is dyed with a dye that subjectively stains theresin binder. The stained specimen is examined for binderdistribution on the batting surface and binder penetrationthrough the batting by comparison to photographic ratingstandards.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method is used in the trade for acceptancetesting of commercial shipments.5.1.1 In case of a dispute arising from differences inreported test results when using this test method, the purchaserand the supplier should conduct comparative tests to determineif there is a statistical bias between their laboratories.Compe-tent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigationof bias.As a minimum, the two parties should take a group oftest samples that are as homogeneous as possible and are froma material lot of the type in question. The test samples shouldthen be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratoryfor testing. The average results from the two laboratoriesshould be compared using a statistical test for unpaired dataand an acceptable probability level chosen by the two partiesbefore the testing is begun. If a bias is found, either its causemust be found and corrected or the purchaser and the suppliermust agree to interpret future test results with consideration ofthe known bias.5.2 This test method is used to assess the distribution ofresin binder application. The distribution of resin binder relatesto batting performance.6.Apparatus and Materials6.1 Dyebath Container, plastic or
