Designation:D595422aStandard Test Method forMercury Sampling and Measurement in Gaseous Fuels byAtomic Absorption Spectroscopy1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5954;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of totalmercury in gaseous fuels at concentrations down to 0.5 ng m3.It includes separate procedures for both sampling and atomicabsorption spectrophotometric determination of mercury.Thisprocedure detects both inorganic and organic forms of mercury.1.2 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regardedas the standard.1.3 WarningMercury has been designated by many regu-latory agencies as a hazardous material that can cause seriousmedical issues.Mercury,or its vapor, has been demonstrated tobe hazardous to health and corrosive to materials.Cautionshould be taken when handling mercury and mercury contain-ing products.See the applicable product Safety Data Sheet(SDS)for additional information.Users should be aware thatselling mercury or mercury containing products,or both, intoyour state or country may be prohibited by law.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the appli-cability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1193 Specification for Reagent WaterD4150 Terminology Relating to Gaseous Fuels2.2 USEPA Document:3Method 1631,Revision E Mercury in analyte that can confidently bedistinguished from background signal.3.2.2 Limit of Quantification, nthe lowest value of analytewhich can be quantitatively described and is represented by thelowest point on the calibration curve.3.2.3 sorbent,na solid material that captures the analyte(mercury)from a gaseous source for quantitative analysis andis securely contained in sample tubes for sampling
