Designation:D664401(Reapproved 2013)Standard Test Method forTension Strength of Sew-Through Flange Buttons1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6644;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method measures the resistance of the bridge ofa sew-through button to a steadily increasing strain.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D5497 Terminology Relating to Buttons(Withdrawn 2011)33.Terminology3.1 For button definitions, refer to Terminology D5497.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 The sew-through flange button is sewn onto fabric andpositioned in a clamping fixture. The combination is subjectedto a strain recorded on a force gauge.4.2 Tests are made on sew through flange buttons beforelaundering or dry cleaning with the option of testing again aftera predetermined number of launderings or dry cleanings.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test measures an important property to users of sewthrough flange buttons. This is a means of determining theresistance of the bridge of the button to a strain which cancause it to fall off a garment to which it is attached.5.2 If there are differences of practical significance betweenthe reported test results for two laboratories(or more),com-parative tests should be performed to determine if there is astatistical bias between them, using competent statistical assis-tance.As a minimum, test samples should be used that are ashomogeneous as possible, that are drawn from the materialfrom which the disparate test results were obtained, and thatare randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory fortesting,Other materials with established test values may beused for this purpose. The test results for the two laboratoriesshould be compared using a statistical test for unpaired data, ata probability level chosen prior to the testing series. If a bias isfound, either its cause must be found and corrected,or futuretest results must be adjusted in consideration of the knownbias.6.Apparatus6.1 Force GaugeOne capable of measuring 20 kg(44 lb)of tension or compression with an accuracy of 6 0.1 kg(60.22 lb).The gauge may be hand held or specially mounted.6.2 Testing MachineA constant rate of extension(CRE)Tester shall be used. The capacity of the machine must beselected for the break position on the gauge to fall within20-90%of full scale.6.3 Jaw Clamping FixtureOne capable of firmly holdingthe button, such as a long nose locking wrench or a 3-prongedclamping device.6.4 Commercial Sewing MachineOne capable of auto-matically sewing the button to.two or more layers of fabric.7.Sampling7.1 Laboratory SampleRandomly select quantity ofbuttons, approximately 100-200,from the same carton andfrom boxes within that carton that adequately represent thematerial from which test specimens may be chosen.7.2 Test SpecimensRandomly select 15-25 buttons fromthe laboratory sample for testing,if test specimens are submit-ted for preproduction approval, testing 15 buttons is accept-able.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D13 on Textilesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D13.54 on Subassemblies.Current edition approved Jan.1,2013.Published February 2013.Originallyapproved in 2001.Last previous edition approved in 2007 as speci-mens as instructed in 9.4 of Practice D618.Preconditioning isnot required.9.Specimen Preparation9.1 Sets, consisting of 5 buttons each, are prepared byattaching the.buttons,at least 12.7 cm(5 in.)apart, withfactory sewing equipment,to at least two layered production ordevelopment fabric processed to production finish.NOTE1Sugg
