Designation:D826222Standard Test Method forDetermining the pH of Granular Material for Use inEmbankments,Subgrades, and Retaining Wall Backfil1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8262;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method uses a pH meter to measure the pH ofas-received granular material that represents what will be usedin the field for embankments, subgrades, and retaining wallbackfill applications. The principal use of the test method is tosupplement soil resistivity measurements to identify conditionsunder which the corrosion of metal embedded in granularmaterial,or in contact with the granular material may besharply accentuated.1.2 The pH of granular material is often specified byagencies to meet criteria that are necessary to prevent or reducecorrosion of metal objects embedded in the granular materialused in embankments, subgrade, and retaining wall backfill.1.3 The types of granular material that can be tested for pHusing this standard are natural or manufactured coarse sand, natural or crushed stone, natural or crushed gravel,air-cooledblast furnace slag, and aggregates:lightweight, heavyweight,or normal weight.According to AASHTO M 145,thesegranular materials generally fall into AASHTO classificationgroups A-1,A-2-4,A-2-5,or A-3.The ideal material is awell-graded,free draining material that has less than 10-15%passing the 75 m(No.200)sieve.1.4 This test is based on the volumetric method because theunit weight of the fill material will vary depending on sourceand project specifications.1.5 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regardedas standard.Except the sieve designations, they are identifiedusing the“alternative”system in accordance with SpecificationE11,such as 3 in.and No.200,instead of the“standard”of 75mm and 75 m,respectively. No other units of measurementare included in this standard.Reporting of test results in unitsother than SI shall not be regarded as nonconformance withthis standard.1.6 All observed and calculated values shall conform to theguidelines for significant digits and rounding established inPractice D6026,unless superseded by this test method.1.6.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded and calculated in the standard are regarded as theindustry standard. In addition, they are representative of thesignificant digits that generally should be retained. The proce-dures used do not consider material variation, purpose forobtaining the data, special purpose studies,or any consider-ations for the users objectives;and it is common practice toincrease or reduce significant digits of reported data to becommensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scopeof these test methods to consider significant digits used inanalysis methods for engineering data.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of
