Designation:D827619Standard Test Method forHydrocarbon Types in Middle Distillates, including BiodieselBlends by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8276;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers an analytical scheme using thegas chromatography/mass spectrometry(GC-MS)to determinethe hydrocarbon types present in middle distillates 170 C to365 C boiling range,5%to 95%by volume as determined byTest Method D86,including biodiesel blends with up to 20%by volume of fatty acid methyl ester(FAME).The detailedhydrocarbon composition, total aromatic hydrocarbon andpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contents can be determined. The hydrocarbon types include:paraffins, noncondensedcycloparaffins, condenseddicycloparaffins, condensedtricycloparaffins, alkylbenzenes, indans or tetralins,or both,CnH2n-10(indenes,etc.),naphthalenes,CnH2n-14(acenaphthenes,etc.),CnH2n-16(acenaphthylenes,etc.),andtricyclic aromatics. The content of FAME in biodiesel blendscan also be determined by GC.1.2 The values stated in acceptable SI units are to beregarded as the standard. No other units of measurement areincluded in this standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM dualcolumnGC-MSsystem,nagaschromatography/mass spectrometry system equipped with ahydrogen flame ionization detector(FID).Samples introducedby the sample introduction system are split into two capillarycolumns in parallel,in which one column connected to the FIDand the other one connected to the mass spectrometer.3.1.3 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nsum of theconcentrations of alkylbenzenes,indans,tetralins,CnH2n-10(indenes,etc.)and polycyclic aromatics.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Samples are separated into saturate,aromatic,and/orFAME fractions by Test Method D8144.Aliquots of internalstandards are added to these fractions and all of these fractionsare analyzed by the dual column GC-MS system. The contents1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM
