Designation:D 6652 01Standard Test Method forDetermining Fibrous Debris From Nonwoven Fabrics1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6652;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the quantifying of fibrous debrisreleased and generated from fabrics.1.2 This test method applies to all fabrics used as wipingmaterials for purposes, such as house-cleaning,cleaning,cleanrooms,spill clean-up or removal, industrial wipes, shoptowels, polishing cloths,etc.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as the standard.Within the text, the inch-pound units are shown in parentheses. The valuesstated in each system are not exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the specification.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 123 Terminology Relating to Textiles2D 6651 Test Method for Determining Rate of Sorption andSorptive Capacity of Nonwoven Fabrics33.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 extrinsic sorptive capacity, nin textile fabrics, thesorptive capacity of a fabric to a specified liquid on aper-unit-area basis under specified conditions.3.1.1.1 DiscussionWhile extrinsic sorptive capacity isexpressed in terms of volume per unit area, intrinsic capacityhas been used to describe capacity in terms of volume per unitmass.By way of example,if a fabric exhibited an intrinsiccapacity of 5 mL/g,that mass of fabric would hold 5 mLwhether it was part of a 50 g/m2or 200 g/m2fabric.Theextrinsic sorptive capacity would, however,be four(4)timeshigher for the 200 g/m2fabric than for the lighter weightmaterial.3.1.2 fibrous debris, nin wiping fabrics, fibrous materialreleased from a fabric during actions such as wet cleaning, polishing or wiping processes, under specified conditions.3.1.3 sorption, nin textile fabrics,a process in whichliquid molecules are taken up either by absorption or adsorp-tion,or both.3.1.4 sorptive capacity, nin textile fabrics, the maximumamount of liquid absorbed and adsorbed under specifiedconditions.3.1.5 wiper, nin textile fabrics, fabric swatches used forsuch actions as housekeeping,cleaning,polishing,spillclean-up or removal.3.2 For definitions of other terms used in this test methodrefer to Terminology D 123.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Releasable Fibrous Debris(Fo)A specimen of knowndimensions is placed flat in a tray and gently sluiced withwater. The resulting suspension is filtered through a membranefilter, and the releasable fibrous debris counted using opticalmicroscopy.4.2 Generated Fibrous Debris(FG)After the releasablefibrous debris(Fo)of a specimen has been determined, thesame specimen(now devoid of readily releasable fibrousdebris)is placed in a jar and shaken for three minutes alongwith a volume of water equal to twenty times the sorptivecapacity of the ply being tested. The resulting suspension isfiltered through a membrane filter, and the generated fibrousdebris counted using optical microscopy.4.3 Simultaneously Determined Releasable Fibrous Debrisand Generated Fibrous Debris(F)Releasable and generatedfibrous debris is determined by either of two procedures:(1)releasable fibrous debris and generated fibrous debris aredetermined separately and the results added together,or(2)theprocedure described for determining generated fibrous debrisonly is used and the releasable fibrous debris and generatedfibrous debris are determined simultaneously.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method can be used for acceptance testing ofcommercial shipments,ut comparisons should be made withcaution because information on estimates of between-laboratory precision is limited as noted in the precision and1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D13 on Textilesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D13.64 on Nonwovens.Current edition approved April 10,2001.Published July 2001.2Annual Book of differences of practical significance be-tween reported test results for two laboratories(or more),comparative tests should be performed to determine if there isa statistical bias between them, using competent statisticalassistance. As a minimum, samples used for such comparativetests should be as homoge
