Designation:D662513(Reapproved 2020)Standard Practice forConducting a Test of Protective Properties of Polish Appliedto a Painted Panel Using Fluorescent UV-CondensationLight-and Water-Exposure Apparatus1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6625;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers the selection of test conditions fromPractice G53 to be employed for exposure testing of polish-coated paint, related coatings, and materials. This practicecovers the basic principles and operating procedures for usingfluorescent ultraviolet(UV)and condensation apparatus tosimulate the deterioration caused by sunlight and water as rainor dew.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D523 Test Method for Specular GlossG53 Practice for Operating Light-and Water-Exposure Ap-paratus(Fluorescent UV-Condensation Type)for Expo-sure of Nonmetallic Materials(Withdrawn 2000)33.Significance and Use3.1 Organic coatings on exterior exposure are subjected toattack by degrading elements of the weather, particularlyultraviolet light, oxygen, and water. This practice may be usedfor evaluating the protective behavior of polish film applied toa coating. This polish-coated coating is then exposed in anapparatus that produces ultraviolet radiation, temperaturevariation, and water condensation for a given time period.3.2 No single light exposure apparatus, with or withoutwater, can be specified as a direct simulation of naturalexposure. This practice does not imply a specific correlationwith outdoor exposure. It is,however, useful in screening therelative protective qualities of a polish within the test param-eter.4.Apparatus and Material4.1 Fluorescent UV/Condensation Apparatus, complyingwith Practice G53.4.2 Glossmeter, using an angle of reflection of 60.Theinstrument and the reference standards shall conform to therequirements prescribed in Test Method D523.4.3 Forced-air Oven.4.4 Q Panel, approximately 7.5 by 15 cm aluminum.4.5 Base Paint Coatingshould be a red paint that gives100%loss in gloss after being exposed to the test in thispractice.Apply this paint to the aluminum Q panel according tothe instructions on the spray can.Allow paint coating to air dryfor 24 h followed by 2 h of drying in a forced-air oven at 50C.4.6 Polishing and Application Cloth shall be the samesize and type for each sample tested.Separate cloths shall beused for each polish and for the application step and buffingstep.Materials such as washed cheesecloth, rumple cloth, flannel, cotton diaper cloth, and nonwoven fabrics are suitablefor this purpose.Felt or paper shall not be used.4.7 Samples of Polish,to be tested.5.Procedure5.1 Apply the test polish to one half of the prepared coatedpanel. If the polish is a commercially available product,follow1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D21 on Polishesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D21.04 on Performance Tests.Current edition approved
