Designation:D6700−01(Reapproved2013)StandardPracticeforUseofScrapTire-DerivedFuel1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationD6700;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(´)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.1.Scope1.1Thispracticecoversandprovidesguidanceforthematerialrecoveryofscraptiresfortheirfuelvalue.Theconversionofawholescraptireintoachippedformedforuseasafuelproducesaproductcalledtire-derivedfuel(TDF).Thisrecoverypracticehasmovedfromapioneeringconceptintheearly1980stoaprovenandcontinuoususeintheUnitedStateswithindustrialandutilityapplications.1.2Combustionunitsengineeredtousesolidfuels,suchascoalorwoodorboth,arefairlynumerousthroughouttheU.S.ManyoftheseunitsarenowusingTDFeventhoughtheywerenotspecificallydesignedtoburnTDF.ItisclearthatTDFhascombustioncharacteristicssimilartoothercarbon-basedsolidfuels.Similaritiesledtopragmatictestinginexistingcombus-tionunits.SuccessfultestingledtosubsequentacceptanceofTDFasasupplementalfuelwhenblendedwithconventionalfuelsinexistingcombustiondevices.ChangesrequiredtomodifyappropriateexistingcombustionunitstoaccommodateTDFrangefromnonetorelativelyminor.Theissuesofproperapplicationsandspecificationsarecriticaltosuccessfulutili-zationofthisalternativeenergyresource.1.3ThispracticeexplainsTDF’susewhenblendedandcombustedundernormaloperatingconditionswithoriginallyspecifiedfuels.Wholetirecombustionforenergyrecoveryisnotdiscussedhereinsincewholetireusagedoesnotrequiretireprocessingtoadefinedfuelspecification.1.4Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.ThevaluesgiveninparenthesesaremathematicalconversionstoSIunitsthatareprovidedforinformationonlyandarenotconsideredstandard.1.5Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-priatesafetyand...
