Designation:D644709(Reapproved 2021)Standard Test Method forHydroperoxide Number of Aviation Turbine Fuels byVoltammetric Analysis1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6447;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 The test method covers the determination of the hydrop-eroxide content of aviation turbine fuels. The test method mayalso be applicable to the determination of the hydroperoxidecontent of any water-insoluble,organic fluid, particularlydiesel fuels, gasolines, and kerosines.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all the safetyconcerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to consult and establish appropriatesafety, health, and environmental practices and determine theapplicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specificwarning statements, see 6.3 6.5,Annex A1,and Annex A2.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1193 Specification for Reagent WaterD3703 Test Method for Hydroperoxide Number of AviationTurbine Fuels,Gasoline and Diesel FuelsD4057 Practice for Manual Sampling of Petroleum andPetroleum Products3.Summary of Test Method3.1 A quantity of sample is contacted with aqueous potas-sium iodide solution in the presence of acid. The hydroperox-ides present are reduced by the potassium iodide. An equiva-lent amount of iodine is liberated, which is quantified byvoltammetric analysis. The results are calculated and reportedas millimoles(mmole)of hydroperoxide per litre of sample.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method and Test Method D3703 measure thesame peroxide species(primarily hydroperoxides)in aviationfuels.4.2 The magnitude of the hydroperoxide number is anindication of the quantity of oxidizing constituents present.Deterioration of fuel results in the formation of hydroperoxidesand other oxygen-carrying compounds. The hydroperoxidenumber measures those compounds that will oxidize potassiumiodide.4.3 The determination of the hydroperoxide number of fuelsis significant because of the adverse effect of hydroperoxidesupon certain elastomers in the fuel systems.5.Apparatus5.1 Voltammetric Analyzer3The instrument used to quan-tify the liberated iodine is a voltammetric analyzer equippedwith a three electrode system and a digital or analog output. The combination electrode system(see Fig.1)consists of aglassy carbon disc(3 mm diameter)working electrode, aplatinum wire(0.5 mm diameter)auxiliary electrode, and aplatinum wire(0.5 mm diameter)reference electrode.Thevoltammetric analyzer applies a linear voltage ramp(0 V to1 V range with respect to the reference electrode)at a rate of0.1 V s to the auxiliary electrode. The current output of theworking electrode is converted to voltage by the voltammetricanalyzer, using the gain ratio of 1 V 20 A.The peak height orpeak area of the voltammetric response to iodine is outputted toan analog or digital recording device(0 V to 1 V full scale).1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 onPetroleum Products,Liquid Fuels, and Lubricantsand is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D02.05 on Properties of Fuels,Petroleum Coke and Carbon Material.Current edition approved Jan.1,2021.Published February 2021.Originallyapproved in 1999.Last previous edition approved in 2014 as D6447 09(2014).DOI:10.1520/D6447-09R21.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact
