Designation:D 777 97(Reapproved 2002)An American National StandardStandard Test Methods forFlammability of Treated Paper and Paperboard1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 777;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This is a fire-test-response standard.1.2 These test methods cover the determination of flamma-bility of paper and paperboards of all types no more than116in.(1.6 mm)in thickness, that have been treated to retard thespread of flame when ignited.Such papers are commonlydesignated as flame-retardant-treated.1.3 These test methods may be used with, and may be usedto distinguish between, paper and paperboard materials havinga flame-retardant-treatment removed by leaching in water, andthose whose flame-retardant-treatment is not removed by waterleaching.1.4 These test methods appear as follows:SectionTest Method AFlammability of Treated Paper and Paperboard Af-ter Leaching for 4 h With 24C Reagent Water8.1Test Method BFlammability of Treated Paper and PaperboardWithout Leaching8.21.5 The primary intended use of Test Method A is withpaper or paperboard materials having a flame-retardant treat-ment that is not removed by water leaching,or to specify theproperties of such materials.1.6 The primary intended use of Test Method B is withpaper or paperboard materials having a flame-retardant treat-ment known to be removed under the leaching conditionsspecified in Test Method A,or where non-removal of theflame-retardant treatment by water leaching is not a desired orspecified property.1.7 This standard should be used to measure and describethe properties of materials, products,or assemblies in responseto heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions andshould not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard orfire risk of materials, products,or assemblies under actual fireconditions. However, results of this test may be used aselements of a fire risk assessment which takes into account allof the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the firehazard of a particular end use.1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 585 Practice for Sampling and Accepting a Single Lot ofPaper,Paperboard,Fiberboard, and Related Product2D 685 Practice for methods.3.1.5 Type II flame retarded, apaper or paperboard havingflame-retardant treatment not removed by leaching with waterunder the conditions described in these test methods.3.2 For terms functionaland decorative purposes requires resistance to the spread offlame. These test methods are useful in both qualitative andquantitative measurement of the flame retardant property ofpaper and paperboard.Certain uses may also require a knowl-edge of the durability of the flame-retardant treatments a
