Designation:D6383/D6383M99(Reapproved 2021)Standard Practice forTime-to-Failure(Creep-Rupture)of Adhesive JointsFabricated from EPDM Roof Membrane Material1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6383/D6383M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers sample preparation temperatures, test parameters, and specimen exposure conditions that areapplicable when Test Method D5405/D5405M is used forconducting time-to-failure(creep-rupture)tests of adhesivejoints fabricated from ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM)roof membrane material.1.2 This practice is applicable to joints fabricated in thelaboratory from EPDM roof membrane materials and adhe-sives received from suppliers, and to joints prepared fromEPDM seams sampled from field installations.1.3 The joints are bonded using preformed tape or liquid-based adhesives, and EPDM roof membrane materials that arenon-reinforced,fabric-or scrim-reinforced,and fabric backed.Primers are also used as recommended for the specific adhe-sive.1.4 This practice contains notes that are explanatory and arenot part of the mandatory requirements of this practice.1.5 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the standard.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.7 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced time-to-failure of a specimen subjected to a constant load;progressivespecimen deformation may also be measured.3.2.2 failurerupture of the bond resulting in completeseparation of its adherents under the test conditions;or,alternatively, rupture of the membrane material away from thebonded section of the test specimen(that is,material rupture).3.2.3 time-to-failurethe period of time beginning when ajoint specimen is placed under load and ending when failureoccurs.4.Summary of Practice4.1 Adhesive joints are prepared in the laboratory at ambi-ent and low temperatures using tape or liquid adhesives andEPDM roof membrane material.Creep-rupture tests are thenconducted in accordance with Test Method D5405/D5405Mbefore and after subjecting these joints to artificial exposure inthe laboratory. The loads are applied in either peel or shearconfigurations at ambient and elevated temperatures.Table 1summarizes the preparation temperatures, test parameters,and1This practice is under
