Designation:D833520Standard Guide forIdentification of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer-Matrix CompositeMaterials1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8335;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide establishes essential and desirable identifica-tion elements for fiber-reinforced composite materials and forfibers, fillers, and core materials, matrices, preforms, prepregs, processes, and parts used in these composite materials.Thisguide is intended for preparing test reports, databases, andmaterial documents.1.2 These guidelines are specific to fiber-reinforcedpolymer-matrix composite materials.Composite materials, which also contain particulates or precipitated particles, arealso included, provided they can be described adequately as afiller in the matrix.1.3 The materials covered by this guide include fibers, bothcontinuous and discontinuous, and fillers of various geometrieswhich are used as reinforcements in composite materials, aswell as core materials used in sandwich composites, matricesboth thermoset and thermoplastic, fiber preforms, prepregproduct forms, manufacturing processes, and generic partforms.Cores may be foam, honeycomb,or naturally occurringmaterials such as balsa wood. These materials are distin-guished from bulk materials by the importance of theirspecialized geometric forms to their properties. This differenceis reflected in the use of geometry, along with chemistry,as aprimary basis for classification.Additional data elements thatare considered desirable, but not essential, are also defined.Thepurpose is to allow the meaningful comparison of data fromdifferent sources.1.4 Data elements in this guide are relevant to test data, dataas obtained in the test laboratory and historically recorded inlaboratory notebooks.Property data, data that have beenanalyzed and reviewed, may only need a subset of these dataelements.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.6 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1600 Terminology forAbbreviated Terms Relating to Plas-ticsD3878 Terminology for Composite MaterialsD6507 Practice for Fiber
