As a result, we use the word “sorry” quite a lot—even when we don't really 13 it! Usually, if you want to ask someone for the 14 , you would start by saying “Sorry to bother you. Do you know the time?” If you're five minutes late for an appointment(约会), you would generally 15 the person by saying “Sorry, I'm late!”  We use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has slightly 16 over time. The two main dictionary definitions (定义) of “sorry” are: feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or feeling regret 17 you've done something wrong. Usually, when you want to ask a stranger a question, you 18 with “Sorry to disturb you.” In this situation, we aren't saying sorry because we feel sad for that person or because we feel 19 .  So what does “sorry” really mean? Well, in the British 20 , saying “sorry” is a way to be polite, especially to people who you don't know very well. It's also a very 21 way to get what you want. 22 , an actor asked different people on a rainy day if he could use their mobile phones. When he asked one group of strangers 23 apologizing first, he was only 9 percent successful in borrowing their phones. 24 , when he apologized to another group about the bad weather before asking if he could use their mobile phones, he was 47 percent successful. So maybe saying “sorry” is not just being polite, but it is also a good 25 to get what you want!  ( )11.A.When B.Whether C.Before D.Though ( )12.A.activities B.conversations C.manners D.discussions ( )13.A.mean B.enjoy C.accept D.use ( )14.A.place B.time C.person D.reason ( )15.A.tell B.face C.remind D.greet ( )16.A.developed B.appeared C.improved D.changed ( )17.A.because B.before C.although D.so ( )18.A.start B.lead C.reply D.go ( )19.A.happy B.regretful C.surprised D.disappointed ( )20.A.history B.tradition C.culture D.habit ( )21.A.safe B.clever C.brave D.true ( )22.A.Finally B.Usually C.Mostly D.Recently ( )23.A.by B.for C.of D.without ( )24.A.Otherwise B.However C.Instead D.Moreover ( )25.A.chance B.method C.decision D.courage Ⅲ.[2023·葫芦岛]阅读理解 What are the basic ingredients(要素) of good manners? A strong sense of fairness is one of them. A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane(单行道),unpaved (未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust(呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road. My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “No,” said the other driver. “But you've endured my dust so far. I'll endure yours the rest of the way.” Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book. A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty.
