Designation:D731707(Reapproved 2019)Standard Test Method forCoagulated Pentane Insolubles in Used Lubricating Oils byPaper Filtration(LMOA Method)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D7317;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of coagulatedpentane insolubles in used lubricating oils by a paper filtrationmethod.1.2 This test method was originally developed by the Fuels,Lubricants, and Environmental Committee(FL&E)of theLocomotive Maintenance Officers Association(LMOA).21.3 This test method is used primary for testing used dieselengine oils from railroad locomotive service. It may be appliedto other samples types but precision, bias, and significancehave not been determined for samples other than used railroadlocomotive diesel engine oils.1.4 This test method,in general, does not correlate with TestMethod D893 on Insolubles in Lubricating Oils, since it usesseparation by centrifugation and a more concentrated solutionof anti-coagulant.1.5 The correlation between this test method and AppendixA4(Enhanced Thermal Gravimetric Analysis(TGA)Proce-dure)in Test Method D5967 has not been investigated.1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.For specific warning statements, see 7.2,7.3,and 7.4.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by insolubles, nin used oilanalysis, separated matter that results when a coagulant isadded to a solution of used oil in pentane.D41753.1.2.1 DiscussionThe addition of a coagulant will aid inseparating finely divided materials that may have been held insuspension because of the dispersant characteristics of the oil.3.1.2.2 DiscussionThis test method uses a 1%coagulantsolution.Test Method D893 uses a 5%coagulant solution.3.1.3 membrane filter, nporous article of closely con-trolled pore size through which a liquid is passed to separatematter in suspension.D41753.1.4 pentane insolubles, nin used oil analysis, separatedmatter resulting when a used oil is dissolved in pentane.D41753.1.4.1 DiscussionIn this test method, the separation iseffected by paper filtration.3.1.5 used oil, nany oil that has been in a piece ofequipment(for example,an engine, gearbox, transformer, orturbine),whether operated or not.D41751This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 onPetroleum Products,Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D02.06 on Analysis of Liquid Fuels and Lubricants.Current edition approved May 1,2019.Published July
