Designation:D704917Standard Test Method forMetalworking Fluid Aerosol in Workplace Atmospheres1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D7049;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers a procedure for the determina-tion of both total collected particulate matter and extractablemass metalworking fluid aerosol concentrations in the range of0.07 to 5 mg/m3in workplace atmospheres.1.2 This test method describes a standardized means ofcollecting worker exposure information that can be comparedto existing exposure databases, using a test method that is alsomore specific to metal removal fluids.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1356 Terminology Relating to Sampling and Analysis ofAtmospheresD3195 Practice for Rotameter of terms relating to this testmethod, refer to Terminology D1356.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 extractable mass, nthe amount of material removedby liquid extraction of the filter using a mixed-polarity solventmixture.3.2.1.1 DiscussionThis mass is an approximation of themetal removal fluid portion of the workplace aerosol.3.2.2 filter set,na group of filters from the same produc-tion lot that are weighed and assembled into the filter cassettesat one time.3.2.2.1 DiscussionThe filter set may be used for samplingon multiple days with the appropriate field blanks beingsubmitted for each sampling day.3.2.3 metal removal fluids, nthe subset of metalworkingfluids that are used for wet machining or grinding to producethe finished part;such fluids are often characterized as straight, soluble, semisynthetic, and synthetic.3.2.3.1 DiscussionMetalworking fluids addressed by thistest method include straight or neat oils, not intended forfurther dilution with water, and water-miscible soluble oils,semi-synthetics,and synthetics, which are intended to bediluted with water before use.Metalworking fluids becomecontaminated during use in the workplace with a variety ofworkplace substances including, but not limited to,abrasiveparticles, tramp oils, cleaners, dirt, metal fines and shavings, dissolved metal and hard water salts,bacteria,fungi,micro-biological decay products, and waste. These contaminants cancause changes in the lubricity and cooling ability of the metalremoval fluid and may have the potential to adversely affect thehealth and welfare of employees exposed to the contaminatedmetal removal fluid.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D22 on AirQuality and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D22.04 on Workplace AirQuality.Current edition approved Oct.1,2017.Published October 2017.Originallyapproved in 2004.Last previous edition approved in 2010 as D7049 04(2010).DOI:10.1520/D7049-17.2For referenced
