Designation:D832921Standard Test Method forDetermination of Water/Cementitious Materials Ratio forGeosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats(GCCMs)andMeasurement of the Compression Strength of theCementitious Material Contained Within1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8329;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 The purpose of the proposed test method is to obtain awater/cementitious material ratio that allows for a practicalmeasurement of the compressive strength of the cementitiousmaterial contained within a geosynthetic cementitious compos-ite mat(GCCM).This water/cementitious material ratio shouldbe generally representative of that achieved practically uponthe hydration of a GCCM.Because GCCM materials do notinvolve mixing or the use of exact water hydration methodswhen employed in the field, this method is necessary to providea quantitative estimate of the water/cementitious material ratio.1.2 This procedure determines the water/cementitious ma-terial ratio for a properly hydrated GCCM,which is then usedto create cube or cylinder specimens for compressive strengthtesting as per the appropriate referenced ASTM test methods.Compressive strength results will then be representative of thestrength of the inherent cementitious material found in theGCCM after normal GCCM hydration.1.3 The values in SI units are to be regarded as standard.Values in inch-pound units are in parentheses for information.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced method involves measuring the mass per unit areaof uncured GCCM samples, measuring the mass per unit areaof the geosynthetic portion(s),and using this to calculate themass per unit area of the cementitious material containedwithin the GCCM.This mass per unit area of the cementitiousmaterial is used in conjunction with the mass per unit area ofthe cured saturated surface dry(SSD)GCCM to determine thewater/cementitious material ratio representative of a properlycured and hydrated GCCM.This water/cementitious materialratio then forms the basis for laboratory preparation of thesame cementitious material for specimens which will then betested for compressive strength as per the appropriate ASTMstandard methods.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D35 onGeosynthetics and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D35.05 on Geosyn-thetic Erosion Control.Current edition approved May 1,2021.Published May 2021.Originallyapproved in 2020.Last previous StatesThis international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.15.Significance and Use5.1 Hydration is a critical aspect of GCCM installation.GCCM installations are often hydrated with excess water toensure that a saturated condition exists. Therefore,it is notgenerally possible to monitor and control exactly the wateraddition that absorbs and hydrates the cementitious materialsdue the practical methods of hydration in use.5.2 It is imp
