Designation:D90398(Reapproved 2010)Standard Test Method forPeel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D903;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the com-parative peel or stripping characteristics of adhesive bondswhen tested on standard-sized specimens and under definedconditions of pretreatment, temperature, and testing machinespeed.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D907 Terminology of Adhesives3.Terminology3.1 DefinitionsMany terms used in this test method aredefined in Terminology D907.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 flexible, nin this test method, indicates a material ofthe proper flexural strength and thickness to permit a turn backat an approximate 180 angle in the expected loading range ofthe test without failure. In order to fulfill all terms of thedefinition,at least one of the adhered materials must beflexible.3.2.2 peel or stripping strength, nthe average load per unitwidth of bond line required to separate progressively onemember from the other over the adhered surfaces at a separa-tion angle of approximately 180 and at a separation rate of 152mm(6 in.)/min.It is expressed in kilograms per millimetre(pounds per inch)of width.4.Apparatus4.1 Testing MachineA power-driven machine, with a con-stant rate-of-jaw separation or of the inclination balance orpendulum type, which fulfills the following requirements:4.1.1 The applied tension as measured and recorded isaccurate within 61%.4.1.2 Hold specimens in the testing machine by grips whichclamp firmly and prevent slipping at all times.4.1.3 The rate of travel of the power-actuated grip is 305mm(12 in.)/min.This rate which provides a separation of 152mm(6 in.)/min is to be uniform throughout the tests.4.1.4 Operate the machine without any device for maintain-ing maximum load indication. In pendulum-type machines, theweight lever swings as a free pendulum without engagement ofpawls.4.1.5 The machine is autographic giving a chart having theinches of separation as one axis and applied tension as the otheraxis of coordinates.4.1.6 The capacity of the machine is such that the maximumapplied tension during test does not exceed 85%nor be lessthan 15%of the rated capacity.4.2 Conditioning Room or DesiccatorsA conditioningroom capable of maintaining a relative humidity of 50 6 2%at 23 6 1C(73.4 6 2F),or desiccators filled with a saturatedsalt solution(Note 1)to give a relative humidity of 50 6 2%at 23 6 1C are required for the conditioning of somespecimens.NOTE1A saturated salt solution of calcium nitrate gives approxi-mately 51%relative humidity at the testing temperature.5.Test Specimen5.1 The test specimen, shown in Fig.1(a),consists of onepiece of flexible material,25 by 304.8 mm(1 by 12 in.),bonded for 152.4 mm(6 in.)at one end to one piece of flexibleor rigid material,25 by 203.2 mm(1 by 8 in.),with theunbonded portions of each member being face to face.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D14 onAdhesives and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D14.80 on MetalBonding Adhesives.Current edition approved Oct.1,2010.Published October 2010.Originallyapproved in 1946.Last previous edition approved in 2004 as D903 98(2004).DOI:10.1520/D0903-98R10.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 5.2 In order to maintain a separation rate of 152.4 mm(6in.)/min the specimen is to be relatively nonextensible in theexpected loading range.Where a material is sufficiently exten-sible to lessen radically the separation rate, back it up with asuitable nonextensible material. In reporting such a test, completely identify the backing material and method.5.3 Test materials are to be thick enough to withstand theexpected tensile pull but not over 3 mm(18in.)in thickness.Wherever possible, the standard thickness of specimens is:metals,1.6 mm(116in.);plastics,116in.;woods,18in.;rubbercompounds,1.9
