Designation:D840921Standard Guide forConducting Stacking Tests on UN Packagings Using Guidedor Unguided Loads1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D8409;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide is intended to provide a standardized methodand a set of basic instructions for conducting stacking tests onUnited Nations(UN)non-bulk,intermediate bulk container(IBC),and Large Packagings.Using guided or unguided loadsin accordance with the U.S.Department of Transportation Title49 Code of Federal Regulations(CFR)and the UN Recom-mendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods(“TheOrange Book”).The combination or interchange of theseregulations will be referred to as the Hazardous MaterialRegulations(HMR).1.2 The Dangerous Goods Regulations require performancetests to be conducted on packaging designs prior to beingauthorized for use.The regulations do not include standardizedprocedures to accomplish this which can result in differencesbetween testing facilities.The purpose of this document is toprovide guidance and to establish a set of common practices forconducting stack testing on packagings undergoing UN certi-fication.1.3 The user of this guide must be trained in accordancewith 49 CFR as required by 172.700 and should be familiarwith other applicable hazardous materials regulations such as;International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO)TechnicalInstructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods byAir,the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code(IMDGCode),and carrier rules such as International Air TransportAssociation(IATA)Dangerous Goods Regulations.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard.The values given in parentheses after SI units areprovided for information only and are not considered standard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety,health,and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior
