Designation:E206312Standard Practice forCalibration and Functionality Checks Used in ForensicPsychophysiological Detection of Deception(Polygraph)Examinations1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E2063;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice provides guidelines for calibration andinstrumentation(both analog and computerized systems)ac-tively used in the psychophysiological detection of deception(verification of truth). As a minimum, such instrumentationshall simultaneously record an individuals respiratory,exoso-matic electrodermal, and cardiovascular activity.1.2 Analog polygraphs shall be calibrated by the psycho-physiological detection of deception(PDD)examiner, manufacturer,or factory-authorized individual.1.3 Computerized instrumentation shall be calibrated by themanufacturer or factory-authorized individual.1.4 The PDD examiner or factory-authorized individualshall perform functionality checks to ensure instrumentation isoperating properly.1.5 This practice does not prohibit additional componentswhich may be offered as supplemental measurements ofphysiological change.Additional recording components(suchas movement sensors)may be used in addition to,but notreplace, the required minimum components and these addi-tional components shall meet the manufacturers specificationsfor calibration.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E1954 Practice for Conduct of Research in Psychophysi-ological Detection of Deception(Polygraph)E2000 Guide for Minimum Basic forcalibration and functionality checks when conducting PDDexaminations and related activities. For additional informationsee Practice E1954 and Guide E2000.5.Minimum Requirements for Calibration andFunctionality Checks of Polygraph Instrumentation5.1 A recorded chart shall be created demonstrating correctfunctioning of the instrument. This chart will be maintained fora minimum period of one year.5.1.1 This chart shall contain the following information, asapplicable:name of person performing calibration or function-ality check, time and date, location, manufacturer, model, andinstrument identification.5.1.2 All notations, settings, and adjustments shall beclearly and permanently noted on the chart(either marked byhand or,in the case of computerized instrumentation,electroni-cally recorded).5.1.3 All calibration and functionality checks shall be con-ducted in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.6.Calibration Check(Analog Instruments)6.1 Calibration or functionality checks shall be conducted inaccordance with the manufacturers specifications.6.2 At any time a malfunction is identified, the instrumentshall not be used to conduct a PDD examination until thatmalfunction has been corrected as demonstrated by an addi-tional calibration or functionality check.6.3 A record in the form of a calibration or functionalitychart shall be kept identifying the time and date, instrumentidentification, and who conducted the calibration or function-ality check.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E52 on ForensicPsychophysiology and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E52.02 onInstrumentation.Current edition approved May 1,2012.Published June 2012.Originallyapproved in 2000.Last previous edition approved in 2011 as E2063
