Designation:E 1828 01An American National StandardStandard Practice forEvaluating the Performance Characteristics of QualitativeChemical Spot Test Kits for Lead in Paint1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 1828;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice describes an evaluation procedure for thedetermination of performance characteristics of qualitativechemical spot test kits for lead,as applied to dry paint films, fora given dry paint film matrix on a given substrate.1.2 This practice may be used to determine the performancecharacteristics of a given lead spot test kit for a given syntheticor field dry paint film matrix, independent of substrate effects.1.3 To allow for comparisons of different spot test kits on anidentical matrix, this practice covers the determination of testkit performance characteristics on a synthetically preparedstandard white lead-containing paint film. The ingredients forthe preparation of a standard synthetic leaded paint film basedon basic lead carbonate are described.1.4 This practice is not intended for the evaluation ofperformance parameters of chemical spot test kits on all typesof paint or paint conditions that may be encountered duringfield use(as described in E 1753).Rather,this practice ad-dresses the evaluation of the response of a chemical spot testkit for lead as a function of lead concentration for a limited setof paint films.Evaluating the performance of a chemical spottest kit for a given application requires tests on a representativesample of paints and substrates found at the location(s)to betested.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 a given sample matrix asdetermined by quantitative analysis(2).3.3.1 DiscussionThe performance curve may be statisti-cally modeled to yield qualitative test kit performance param-eters for lead
