WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless,whenotherscannotworkatall,whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatenstobankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerobslawabidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillionsofpoorchildrencannotevenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeourfriend. Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps,butwehavenotdoneso.Insteadwehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenourconfidence.Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.Americanshaveeverbeenarestless,questing,hopefulpeople,andwemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.FromourRevolutiontotheCivilWar,totheGreatDepression,totheCivilRightsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthesecrisesthepillarsofourhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundationsofournationwewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowAmericans,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit. Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwithAmerica. Andsotodaywepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift,andanewseasonofAmericanrenewalhasbegun. TorenewAmericawemustbebold.Wemustdowhatnogenerationhashadtodobefore.Wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,intheirjobs,andintheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmassivedebt...andwemustdosoinaworldinwhichwemustcompeteforeveryopportunity.Itwillnotbeeasy.Itwillrequiresacrifice,butitcanbedone,anddonefairly.Notchoosingsacrificeforitsownsake,butforourownsake.Wemustprovideforournationthewayafamilyprovidesforitschildren.
