Designation:E211011Standard Terminology forExterior Insulation and Finish Systems(EIFS)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E2110;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This terminology covers terms and definitions pertain-ing to materials and processes used in the design and applica-tion of exterior insulation and finish systems(EIFS).2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E2112 Practice for Installation of Exterior Windows,Doorsand Skylights3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:accessories, npreformed metal, fiberglass,or plastic mem-bers for use to form corners, edges, control joints, ordecorative effects.aesthetic joint,na deprecated term.See aesthetic reveal.aesthetic reveal,na groove cut into the insulation boardwhich serves the function of decoration or to provide astarting or stopping point for finish-coat application,or both.back wrapping,na deprecated term.See wrap.base coat, nthe initial wet-state material, either factory orfield-mixed,used to encapsulate the nonmetallic reinforcingmesh or fasten the insulation to the substrate.cold joint, nthe visible junction in a finish coat.cure, vto develop the ultimate properties of a wet-statematerial by a chemical process.drainage mat, ncomponent used in some EIFS-clad drain-age wall assemblies,a corrosion resistive material used as aspacer to provide a drainage path between the EIFS and theweather resistive barrier.dry, vto develop the ultimate properties of a wet-statematerial solely by evaporation of volatile ingredients.durability, nthe capability of a building assembly, component, product,or construction to maintain serviceabil-ity over not less than a specified time.edge wrap, nthe condition of the perimeter at the EIFSwhere the reinforced base coat is terminated by wrapping thereinforced base coat onto the edge of the substrate.(See Fig.1.)EIFS,nsee exterior insulation and finish system(EIFS).EIFS-clad barrier wall assembly,na wall assembly forwhich the EIFS cladding provides weather resistance for theEIFS clad portion of the assembly.EIFS-clad drainage wall assembly,na wall assemblyincorporating a means of drainage between the EIFS and aweather resistive barrier, for incidental moisture resultingfrom a breach in the EIFS,to the exterior of the EIFS cladportion of the assembly.embed, vto encapsulate the nonmetallic reinforcing mesh inthe base coat.expansion joint,na structural separation between buildingelements that allow independent movement without damageto the assembly.exterior insulation and finish system(EIFS),nnonloadbearing, exterior wall cladding system that consists of aninsulation board attached either adhesively or mechanically,or both,to the substrate;an integrally reinforced base coat;and a textured protective finish coat.factory mix,na material that is prepared at the point ofmanufacture and is ready to use without the addition of othermaterials, except possibly water to adjust consistency.flash set(quick set),nthe early hardening or stiffness in theworking characteristics of Portland-cement paste, mortar, orconcrete, usually with the evolution of considerable heat.Stiffness cannot be dispelled nor the plasticity regained byfurther mixing without addition of water;also known asquick set.field mix,na material that is mixed in the field with othercomponents or water,or both.1This terminology is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E06 onPerformance of Buildings and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E06.58on Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems(EIFS).Current edition approved Nov.1,2011.Published November 2011.Originallyapproved in 2000.Last previous edition approved in 2009 as E2110 091.DOI:10.1520/E2110-11.2For referenced ASTM texture, applied over the reinforced base coat.framing member, nstuds, joists, runners(tracks),bridging, bracing, and related accessories manufactured or supplied inwood for hot-or cold-formed steel.initial grab, nthe ability of a wet-state material to remain inplace initially after it has been applied.initial set,na time-related set caused by the hydrationprocess.integrally reinforced base coat, nbase coat that has beenreinforced with the nonmetallic reinforcing mesh and thatmaintains its shape and attachment in its dry state by its bondto the insulation board.lamina, ncomposite of the base coat, reinforcement, andfinish coat.mechanical fastener,na corrosion-resistant component
