test method is applicable only to sealed insulatingglass units, with one or two airspaces, fabricated for visionglass areas for use in buildings, such as sliding doors,win-dows,wall systems, and picture windows.1.3 This test method is not applicable to sealed insulatingglass units that are constructed from vision materials other thanglass.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.5 This standard may involve hazardous materials,opera-tions,and equipment. This standard does not purport toaddress all of the safety concerns,if any, associated with itsuse. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard toestablish appropriate safety and health practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.Aspecific hazard statement is given in Note 1.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:E 773 Test Method for Accelerated Weathering of SealedInsulating Glass Units2E 774 Specification for the Classification of the Durabilityof Sealed Insulating Glass Units23.Terminology3.1 Definition of Term Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 foggingvisible deposits present after testing in ac-cordance with Section 8.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method is intended to provide a means forevaluating fogging of sealed insulating glass units.5.Apparatus5.1 Cooling Plate, approximately 127 mm(5 in.)square, tobe centered on the back side of each specimen. The tempera-ture of the cooling plate shall be 21 6 3C(70 6 5F).(SeeFig.1.)5.2 Ultraviolet Light Source3Ultraviolet light output ofthe source shall be tested every 200 h and shall have an outputnot less than 20 kW/m2when tested at the specimen glasssurface. The intensity shall be measured with a long-waveultraviolet light meter.4If the ultraviolet light output fallsbelow the minimum, the lamp shall be replaced.5.3 The temperature at the glass surface shall be 656 3C(150 6 5F).NOTE1Warning:Ultraviolet light sources used in this test methodare harmful, especially to the eyes.Appropriate protective measures mustbe observed.NOTE2The conditions of a minimum output of 20 kW/m2whentested at the distance needed to maintain the temperature at the glasssurface of 65 6 3C(150 6 5F)can be obtained with a single 275 to 300watt RS1 sun lamp. These conditions can also be obtained using anOsram5lamp.Alternatively,a long wave UV bulb(B100A)6and aninfrared lamp can be used.6.Test Specimens6.1 Test specimen design and construction shall be estab-lished by Test Method E 773.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E-6 onPerformance of Buildings and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E06.22on Durability Performance of Building Constructions.Current edition approved June 10,1997.Published August 1997.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 04.11.3The previous ultraviolet light source was a 275 W,Type RS sunlamp orequivalent.4The
