Designation:E 1408 91(Reapproved 2000)Standard Test Method forLaboratory Measurement of the Sound Transmission Lossof Door Panels and Door Systems1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 1408;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method describes the laboratory measurementof the sound transmission loss for door panels and doorsystems. It also includes the measurement of the force requiredto close and latch,as well as to unlatch the door under test.Anappendix presents methods to determine the respective contri-bution of the door components and seals to the sound trans-mission loss of a door system.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced 634.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 doorany sliding, folding, rolling, lifting, swingingor dropping partition that provides access and can be manuallyor automatically opened and closed.3.2.2 door panelthe component of the door system thatconstitutes a movable barrier without accessories:that is,theportion of a door system which may be tested as a fixed panel(room divider). The term door panel may be used in the reportas part of the description of the designated door system(forexample, door panel construction).3.2.3 door systemthe combined assembly of the compo-nents designated by or provided by the test sponsor whichenables a fully operable door panel to function in normalmanner while fulfilling its intended purpose. The door systemshall include a jamb,threshold/plate/finished floor,lockset/latch/deadbolt,knob/lever/handle,hinges/rollers/guides,stops,panel/barrier/partition,strike plate, hardware, and seals(fixed, automatic, pneumatic, magnetic,or manually adjustable).Thesystem may include mail slots, vision lights, security devices, bells, buzzers, chimes, knockers, door closures,vents,andadd-on panels.3.2.4 multiple doorstwo or more doors mounted side byside(in a single vertical plane),with a common astragal ormullion;or two or more doors mounted in tandem a series ofvertical planes with intermediate airspace(s).3.2.5 operable and fixed sealsthe combined assembly ofcomponents intended to minimize the passage of air, light, orwater through or around the door panel and frame assembly. The seals may also perform other functions such as controllingeffects of chemical,thermal,blast,security,hydraulics,meter-ology,radio frequency interference(RFI)or electro magneticinterference(EMI);however, for this test method, only thereduction of airborne sound transmission shall be evaluated.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 After the complete door system is installed and all finaladjustments are completed, the force or torque to open and toclose the door shall be measured during the operable test(seeSection 7).Subsequently the sound transmission loss of thedoor system shall be tested for two conditions in any order ofpreference:a fully operable door and a sealed panel(seeSection 6).1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E-33 onEnvironmentalAcoustics and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E33.03 onSound Transmission.Current edition approved May 8,1991.Published July 1991.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 04.06.3Available from American National Standards Institute,11 W.42nd St.,13thFloor,New York,NY 10036.1Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method is used for three purposes:the labora-tory measurement of(1)the sound transmission loss of fullyoperable doors equipped with a particular combination ofhardware and seals,(2)the sound transmission loss of alaboratory sealed door panel and(3)the force or torquerequired to operate the door system.5.2 This test method relies upon Test Method E 90 foracoustical testing, and all requirements in that standard,includ-ing Annex A2(Laboratory Accreditation). Also see 6.1 foradditional references and requireme
