editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers a disposable tube used formeasuring the erythrocyte sedimentation rate,ESR(the sus-pension stability of red cells in diluted,anti-coagulated humanblood).1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E438 Specification for Glasses in Laboratory Apparatus3.Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 disposable, nin accordance with this specificationand the expected product performance expressed in thisstandard, those tubes which are to be used one time only.Anyinstitution or individual who resuses a disposable tube mustbear full responsibility for its safety and effectiveness.3.1.2 Westergren3,nsurname of the individual responsiblefor the design of the reusable Westergren tube and the methodof use for both reusable and disposable tubes.4.Classification4.1 This specification covers a tube that is intended to beused one time only.It is not to be confused with a reusable tubethat is described in other published standards. The tubes shallbe of the following types:4.1.1 Type Istandard Westergren tube to be used in con-ventional racks only,and4.1.2 Type IIself-zeroing tubes to be used with racksdesigned with convenient disposable tube features.5.Materials5.1 GlassThe tubes made to this specification shall befabricated from borosilicate glass,Type I,Class B,or soda limeglass,Type II,in accordance with Specification E438.6.Physical Requirements6.1 Design,Type I and IIThe Westergren tube shall bemade of one-piece construction from tubing that is straight andof uniform bore. The ends of the tube shall be cut at rightangles to the axis of the tube and fire polished.6.1.1 Type II onlyEach tube shall have an absorbant cottonplug inserted in the tube with the bottom edge of the plugaligned with the 0 mm calibration line. The alignment of theplug to the calibration line should not vary by more than 1 mL.The plug must be capable of supporting a 200 mm verticalcolumn of water when the plug has been thoroughly soaked.NOTE1With possible printing scale variation and cotton plugalignment to the calibration line variation, the bottom of the cotton plug isto be located 200 6 1 mm from the bottom of the tube.6.2 WorkmanshipThe tube shall be free as possible fromvisible defects which would detract from its appearance orimpair its serviceability when viewed by the human eye undernormal room lighting.Self-zeroing tubes are to be used withracks designed with convenient disposable tube features.6.3 DimensionsDimensions and tolerances shall be inaccordance with Fig.1.The uniformity of the bore shall be60.15 mm throughout the tube. The tube shall have aninscribed graduated scale extending over the lower 200 6 1.0mm of the tube. The markers or vendors name or mark shallbe inscribed on the tube in a selected location.Inscription ofthe word“Westergren”on the tube is optional.Type II tubesmay be made of varied lengths from 230 to 243 mm long withthe selected length within this range confined to a 61 mmtolerance.6.4 Graduation LinesThickness of graduation lines mayvary in uniformity but shall not exceed 0.4 mm in thickness. They shall lie at right angles to the axis of the tube with amaximum tolerance between two adjacent markings of 0.25mm.Maximum tolerance for the total 200 mm scale shall notexceed 1.0 mm.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E41
