Designation:D91315Standard Practice forEvaluating Degree of Traffic Marking Line Wear1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D913;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers the evaluation of degree of resis-tance to wear that may occur with traffic markings in road tests(see Practice D713)or in actual service, using photographicstandards for comparative evaluation.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety problems,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D713 Practice for Conducting Road Service Tests on FluidTraffic Marking Materials2.2 ASTM Adjuncts:Glossy Prints of Photographic Reference33.Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 failure, described by these photographic references, nthat condition manifested in traffic markings by actualdetachment of sections of the film from its substrate or erosionof sections of the marking down to the substrate.3.1.1.1 DiscussionThe degree of resistance to failure isjudged by the amount of substrate that is covered.3.1.2 substrate, nthe roadway surface or previously ap-plied traffic marking over which the traffic marking beingtested was applied.4.Significance and Use4.1 This practice is designed to evaluate the resistance towear of a traffic marking. It must be remembered that a highdegree of performance of traffic marking applied to a bare roadsurface may not guarantee similar results when the same trafficmarking is applied over old markings.5.Type of Failure5.1 The failure as described in Section 3 does not presumeany specific mechanism, and all areas where the substrate isvisible shall be considered a failure.6.Use of Photographic References6.1 The photographic references3that are part of thispractice are representative of the degrees of resistance to wearof stripes of traffic markings(Fig.1).6.1.1 The degree of resistance to wear is likely to vary overany given area.It is therefore preferable to use one of thefollowing grading methods:6.1.1.1 Select an area as representative and base the relativeperformance of the traffic marking on this area or6.1.1.2 Grade segments of the traffic marking and averagethese gradings.NOTE1The photographic references are representative of stripes oftraffic markings. The percentage of surface covered is shown on eachreference.7.Procedure7.1 Compare the representative areas of the traffic markingwith the photographic references and estimate the percent ofintact film.8.Report8.1 Report the mean and range of the substrate coverageestimations,if appropriate.9.Keywords9.1 durability;pavement markings;resistance to wear;traf-fic markings;traffic paint1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01
