087=FOREWORD It is the intent of this standard to define pressure relief devices, their functional and operational charac-teristics,and to standardize terminology covering such devices and their characteristics. The effort was begun in July,1961 when the Chlorine Institute asked ASA(now known as ANSI)to initiate a project in the field of safety device nomenclature.A general conference of interested groups was held to determine the desirability of starting such a pro-ject.The sense of the meeting was that the work of drafting such a standard should be begun and the ASME was asked to be the sponsor(now known as secretariat)of the project. An organizational meeting of B95 was held on June 8,1965 with subsequent meetings held on June 7,1966,December 6,1966 and June 6,1967.A first draft document was submitted for letter ballot approval of the committee on November 7,1967.This ballot resulted in comments which indicated that further re-visions were required.Another draft was submitted for letter ballot approval of the committee on December 16,1970.Final approval for that standard was granted by ANSI on April 4,1972,as ANSI B95.1-1972.After a period of usage and adoption of much of the content by various organizations,it became ap-parent that a revision should be considered to promote more widespread acceptance of the document.A reorganization meeting was held on September 16,1975 and work initiated towards revision of the 1972 document. The final draft of the proposed revision as approved by the committee was submitted to the secretariat organization and to the American National Standards Institute for final approval as an American National Standard.Final approval was granted by.ANSI on August 12,1977.The B95 Standards Committee and the Secretariat extend grateful acknowledgment to past chairmen J.P.Myers and H.F.Ferrill,and past secretary R.L.Mitchell for their contributions to the work of the Commit tee.iii Copyright ASME International Provided by IHS under
