networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-FOREWORD DURING the summer ot 1945,there were some discussions of the SAE Serrated Shaft Standard which disclosed some inconsistencies.It was also brought out that a great many serrations,as generated by bobbing especially,had an involute form even though they were considered straight.This fact forced a decision to proceed to develop a 45 deg Involute Serration Standard to replace the old SAE Standard,and a committee was appointed as a subcommittee of the Parts and Fittings Division to develop the new standard and review the old by adding desired information.In the new standard,even diametral pitches were adBpted,which are slightly coarser than the old SAE Standard.The range of teeth used presents diarpeters both smaller and larger than the old stand-ard,so that throughout there is much greater selection of sizes.The introduction of allowable errors and effective fits into the Involute Spline Standard has made necessary the same procedure for the Involute Serrations.These are now incorporated as Table 13,and in order to include effective fits the pin measurements are now given as maximum for the internal and minimum for the external.In order to calculate all fits,it is now necessary to have basic measurements between and over pins,and new tables have been included,and also new tables giving the maximum tooth space and the minimum tooth thickness.The scope of sizes given has also,at the request of NASr.,been increased for 40/80,48/96,64/128,80/160,and the rang-e of the 32/64 moved downward to agree with the coarser pitches.The text of the SAE standard was approved by Sectional Committee(135)on the Standardization of Small Tools and Machine Tool Elements,as the proposed American Standard for Involute Serrations
