0533343 479 m FOREWORD(This Foreword is not a part of ASME 816.32-1992.)In the spring of 1920,the American Engineering Standards Committee(later succes-sively named American Standards Association,United States of America Standards In-stitute,and American National Standards Institute)authorized the organization of a Sectional Committee(later named Standards Committee)on the Standardization o f Pipe Flanges and Fittings for the purpose of unifying and further developing the flanged and threaded fitting standards in force in this country.Designated as the joint sponsors were the American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME),Heating and Piping Contractors National Association(later named the Mechanical Contractors Association of America),and the Manufacturers Standardization Society of the Valve and Fittings Industry(MSS).Standards for solder joint fittings were originally developed by Subcommittee No.11 of Sectional Committee A40,Minimum Requirements for Plumbing and Standardization of Plumbing Equipment,organized in 1936 within the American Standards Association(ASA).In 1949,responsibility for solder joint fittings was transferred to newly formed Subcommittee No.9 of Sectional Committee B16 on Standardization of Pipe Flanges and Fittings.The Sovent system for plumbing drainage systems was developed in Switzerland in 1961.Patent rights were
